Alison Steadman revealed that she was "so upset" when she found out on DNA Journey that her father had been adopted as a baby – something which he never even knew himself.
The 76 year old actress appeared on Tuesday's Good Morning Britain alongside her former Gavin & Stacey co-star, Larry Lamb, 75, to discuss the family secret that she'd unearthed.
Speaking to GMB presenters, Susana Reid and Ed Balls, Alison said: "My father was adopted, which I didn't know, none of us knew in our family," before Larry interjected: "'It knocked her sideways!"
Alison wrapped an arm around her friend as she shared that she was "so glad" he was there to support her when she got the emotional news on the show.
Sadly, she said: "I don't think [my father] knew. He was eight months old," as she added: "I was so glad that I had Larry with me honestly because I was just so upset by it, I really was."
She went on to reveal that her grandmother, aunt and uncle all knew that her father was adopted but never told her.
'"My grandmother, my aunt, my uncle they all knew [and] they didn't tell me, but they were lovely people that's the main thing and I love them to bits.
"But to find out suddenly that my grandma wasn't my grandma as it was, was quite upsetting."
In a twist, Larry revealed that he had found out later in life that his mother was also adopted, but that he found it less shocking than Alison did when she found out her news.
"I'd found out the same sort of thing – my mother was adopted," he explained.
"And there was a whole chain of things that sprang off that, so I kind of got where Alison was. Mine was kind of easier to accept but Ally's, this was a big shaking of the keystone."
The duo also revealed if the rumours about another Gavin & Stacey Christmas special are true.
Unfortunately for fans of the hit show, Larry replied: "I wouldn't hold your breath – and certainly not this Christmas."
Fans of the comedt, which ended in 2010, were thrilled when it came back for a Christmas special in 2019, reuniting some of the legendary characters, such as Gavin (played by Matthew Horne), Stacey (Joanna Page), Nessa (Ruth Jones) and Smithy (James Corden).
Aliso also shut down whispers of another reunion, as she said: "I wouldn't know. Honestly, it's the truth. I doubt it'll go again but that's what I said in the nine-year gap [between the sitcom finale and the Christmas special] and I was wrong."
Alison and Larry played Gavin's parents, Pam and Mick Shipman, in the iconic comedy series.
