Amir Khan under police investigation after filming himself while driving

Police are investigating an incident in which Amir Khan appeared to film himself speaking to fans on a YouTube livestream while driving his £100,000 Range Rover.

The video reportedly showed the star behind the wheel driving around his hometown Bolton and speaking to his followers for eight minutes on Christmas Day.

According to reports in The Sun, while the boxer and I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here star didn’t appear to touch his phone, he was seen looking down at his mobile and reading messages during the livestream.

It’s claimed the video clip of Khan – which has since been deleted – was viewed almost 40,000 times.

Greater Manchester Police said in a statement to Metro.co.uk: ‘On Sunday 2 January 2022, GMP was made aware of a video on social media which appears to have been filmed whilst driving a vehicle.

‘Police are currently investigating.’

Under current UK laws, drivers are banned from texting or making a phone call while using a handheld device, other than in an emergency. You must have hands-free access, such as a Bluetooth headset, voice command, a dashboard holder or windscreen mount and you must stay in full control of your vehicle at all times and not become distracted by the device.

This still applies if you’ve stopped at traffic lights or queuing in traffic, and from 2022, drivers will also not be allowed to take photos or videos, scroll through playlists or play games on their phones when driving.

The former light-welterweight boxing champion was previously slapped with a six-month driving ban in 2007 after he was found guilty of careless driving after he went through a red light in the wrong lane and knocked down a pedestrian.

In 2008 he was also handed down a 42-day driving ban after he was caught speeding at 140mph on the M62 in 2006.

It comes ahead of Khan’s return to the boxing ring after two years, as he prepares to go up against long-time British rival Kell Brook, at the Manchester Arena next month.

Metro.co.uk contacted Khan’s reps for comment.
