Jo Whiley presents highlights from first day of Glastonbury
Sheffield rockers Arctic Monkeys were forced to briefly halt their hugely hyped Glastonbury headline set, as festivalgoers frantically called out for medical help.
Mid set people in the crowd started waving their mobile phones in a bid to attract the attention of stewards, who rushed to help a stricken attendee.
Lead singer Alex Turner and the band briefly stopped to ensure that they could get the help they needed.
“There was a moment last night in Arctic Monkeys’ set where they dramatically paused [the] gig as fan fell unwell,” an onlooker told The Mirror.
“Festivalgoers about 40 metres deep from the stage cried for medics, and frantically waved mobile phone lights, to attract the attention of stewards who rushed into the crowd to help.

“The band briefly paused their set to allow the stewards to deal with the situation before resuming.”
The performance was the band’s first since they were forced to cancel their Dublin show with one day’s notice earlier this week, due to frontman Alex suffering from Laryngitis.
They took to their Instagram to explain the situation to their 6.7 million followers.
“We are extremely sorry to announce the cancellation of Arctic Monkeys’ show at Marlay Park in Dublin Tomorrow,” they began.
“Alex is suffering from acute laryngitis, and following medical advice, has been ordered to rest,” they said.

While there was no indication of his illness as the 37-year-old took to the stage for the bands 90-minute set, fans did feel that they had slowed down the tracks.
One observer calling themselves @_kjs1874 wrote: “I’m sorry but I refuse to believe anyone enjoys watching Arctic Monkeys live. They sound so off beat, slow and lazy. Amazing songs, but butchered on stage”.(sic)
@banananahannnah commented: “I love Arctic Monkeys but playing the older songs in this tone that Alex is so dead set on keeping is such a disgrace to the fans and those songs. Slower songs aren’t bad but you can’t play (ex.) R U Mine slow, it wasn’t made for that and that’s not why people liked it.”
@Tom_Dalton97 added: “I fell in love with the Arctic Monkeys because of the energy and excitement in the songs. That performance was too slow for me, still some bangers played though.”
Meanwhile a user called @bathyphen commented: “Feeling a bit disappointed with the Arctic Monkeys at Glastonbury. Mardybum & Bet you look good on the dance floor, the only good ones. They’ve gone so slow & downbeat for my liking xx.” (sic)
However some fans did seem to enjoy the set and defended the band for the performance.
@Weezus07 insisted: “Well I thought they were brilliant and I am abso buzzing for the morn #ArcticMonkeys”.(sic)
While @elldorado89 was keen to point out that the festival experience was different to watching at home.
“Sick of reading these negative tweets about Arctic Monkey’s set last night from the armchair fans.
“Of course you’re entitled to your own opinion but you cannot compare watching a festival gig on TV to being in the crowd, completely different experience for the masses in the field,” they commented.
