Barack Obama and Bruce Springsteen to Publish a New Book

Earlier this year, former President Barack Obama and rock icon Bruce Springsteen co-hosted for a podcast, entitled Renegades. Now, the pair are spinning their audio collaboration into a new book, Renegades: Born in the USA, set to be released by Crown, an imprint of Penguin Random House, on October 26. The 320-page, oversized book will include, per the New York Times, “introductions by Obama and Springsteen, more than 350 photos and illustrations, and archival material such as Springsteen’s handwritten lyrics and Obama’s annotated speeches.”

The book will be published in partnership with Higher Ground, Barack and Michelle Obama’s media company.

Renegades the book will build off of Springsteen and Obama’s podcast conversations about race, masculinity, marriage, social justice, and the future of the United States.

“Over the years, what we’ve found is that we’ve got a shared sensibility. About work, about family, and about America,” Obama writes in his introduction, per Pitchfork. “In our own ways, Bruce and I have been on parallel journeys trying to understand this country that’s given us both so much. Trying to chronicle the stories of its people. Looking for a way to connect our own individual searches for meaning and truth and community with the larger story of America.”

Springsteen adds, “This is a time for serious consideration of who we want to be and what kind of country we will leave our children. Will we let slip through our hands the best of us or will we turn united to face the fire? Within this book you won’t find the answers to those questions, but you will find a couple of seekers doing their best to get us to ask better questions.”

Both men have previously had tremendous success in the book world. The first part of Obama’s memoirs, A Promised Land, was released last year and has sold 8.2 million copies globally, and nearly five million in North America. Springsteen’s own memoir, Born to Run, was released in 2016 and sold nearly half a million hardcover copies in its first few months. Obama and Springsteen became close during the former President’s 2008 campaign, and continued their friendship throughout the years.
