Bette Midler’s stellar career has taken her to all four corners of the Earth, winning a wide range of awards in her time. In a career spanning over five decades, she has won four Golden Globe awards, three Primetime Emmy Awards, two Tony Awards and a host of others. One of her many films — Beaches — airs on Channel 5 this afternoon at 3:25pm.

The film tells the story of a friendship, formed on a beach, between two little girls from opposite ends of society.

Their initial meeting signals the beginning of a lifelong friendship as the pair stay in touch for a number of years by writing to one another.

Years later, San Francisco rich kid Hillary moves to New York to stay with her friend.

The film charters the stages of their friendship, their respective romances and them both falling for the same man.

Ms Midler, 76, has a history of social media rows with outspoken journalist and broadcaster Piers Morgan.

The pair clashed two years ago after Mr Morgan demanded Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have their royal titles removed.

The Duchess of Sussex had delivered a speech to the When All Women Vote initiative which sought to boost female suffrage, prompting Mr Morgan to accuse her of politicising her role.

He tweeted: “The Queen must strip the Sussexes of their titles. They can’t remain as royals & spout off about foreign elections in such a brazenly partisan way.

Ms Midler replied simply: “Oh, f*** off.”

Mr Morgan swifty taunted her with the advice to “#BeKind”, and reignited the feud a matter of days later in his Daily Mail column.

He wrote: “Meghan Markle has flagrantly breached royal protocol by urging Americans to vote against President Trump in the forthcoming US election, telling an online event it’s the ‘change we all need and deserve’.

“I tweeted that she and Prince Harry should have their Duke and Duchess of Sussex titles removed by the Queen – then they can be as politically partisan as they want without damaging the impartial integrity of the monarchy.

“‘Oh f*** off,’ spat back Bette Midler, singing legend turned foul-mouthed social media troll.

“She then retweeted a British TV historian, Professor Kate Williams, who said my criticism was ‘racist madness’.

“Of course, my irritation at the Duchess Meghan’s political rhetoric has nothing to do with her skin colour but — as I address in my new book, Wake Up, published on October 15 — this is now the catch-all defence by ‘woke’ liberals to any criticism of anything she does.”

Ms Midler got her own back the following year when Mr Morgan famously walked off Good Morning Britain live on air.

He had clashed with co-star Alex Beresford over Meghan’s claims during their the Sussexes’ interview with Oprah Winfrey about her mental health.

Moments after he walked off, Ms Midler waded in, tweeting: “#PiersMorgan has been dishing it out for years & he walked out & quit after a minute of criticism by a colleague? Even #Viagra can’t help a man who is that soft.”

Mr Morgan again took to his Daily Mail column to respond to her comments.

He wrote: “There’s a difference between foul-mouthed abuse or threats, and a robustly held derogatory opinion — and sometimes you just have to applaud a good zinger, even one at your own expense.”

Ms Midler has never been one to shy away from voicing her disapproval. She was a staunch critic of former US President Donald Trump.

After the unprecedented scenes at the Capitol last year, she tweeted: “Donald Trump KILLED people at the Insurrection.

“If he had put a gun to their heads, he could not have done a more efficient job. And two policemen killed themselves from shame. Have you no hearts, Republicans? Never, ever again say ‘#BlueLivesMatter’. You’re f***ing liars.”

She had previously labelled Mr Trump a “murderer” of America’s failure to control the coronavirus pandemic.

Beaches airs at 3:25pm on Channel 5 this afternoon.
