Britney Spears’ mom is quite pleased with the latest development in her conservatorship battle.
ICYMI, earlier this week, Brit’s dad, James “Jamie” Spears, announced in new legal filings that he’s willing to step down as the conservator of her estate. Even though Jamie’s filing made it explicitly clear that he has no intention of stepping down immediately, the development ignited a wave of excitement from the #FreeBritney movement—and those who know her IRL.
The singer’s lawyer, Mathew Rosengart, called Jamie’s willingness to step down “a major victory for Britney Spears and another step toward justice” and Britney’s mom, Lynne Spears, made it clear she sees the news as a huge step in the right direction for Britney, too.
“Lynne Spears is pleased Jamie has agreed to step down,” Gladstone N. Jones, Lynne’s attorney, said in a statement to ET Online. “Lynne entered into this conservatorship to protect her daughter almost three years ago. She has accomplished what she set out to do. She will have no further comment.”
This isn’t the first time Lynne has publicly support Britney in her quest to have Jamie removed from the conservatorship. In July, she filed a declaration in support of Britney, in which she said that her daughter’s feelings toward Jamie had “dwindled to nothing but fear and hatred.”
“I became involved in this conservatorship during what I will term a ‘time of crisis’ that began at the end of 2018 and continued into 2019,” Lynne wrote (per E!). She went on to add that Jamie’s “mistrust of [Britney], his coercion of her, his ‘bartering’ with her over what she can and cannot do for whatever reward or punishment he is willing to mete out, his constant threats, and his decision-making over all aspects of her life.”
