Britney Spears has been placed under a conservatorship for nearly 12 years, following a battle with mental health.

The 39 year old Toxic singer’s father Jamie is legally responsible for Britney’s finances and life, which was explored in an eye-opening documentary Finding Britney Spears released earlier this year.

Now, a new documentary has claimed that unearthed court documents say she could be living under the legal restraints because Britney suffers from dementia.

Journalist Mobeen Azhar has claimed he obtained documents that appear to reveal the condition is the reason why dad Jamie has managed her life.

In The Battle for Britney: Fans, Cash and a Conservatorship, Mobeen said he initially thought the dementia claims were a “conspiracy theory”.

He explained: “It sounded a bit out there. There are a couple of fan sites who said they have got hold of paperwork surrounding the conservatorship.

“I’ve got no way of knowing if these are legit but this looks like it’s linked to the conservatorship.”

Documentary maker Modeen went on: “You have to tick a box justifying the reason and the box that is ticked, it says: ‘The order is related to dementia placement or treatment as specified’.”

Less than 5% of dementia patients are under the age of 65 in the US, so Mobeen explained he thinks it’s “unlikely” she is suffering from the condition unless she is a “medical anomaly”.

Mobeen added: “There’s only two options with that. Britney might have dementia. Now I’m not a doctor but if that’s the case, then the world isn’t aware of that. But the other option is actually more sinister.

“That’s the idea that she doesn’t have dementia but the conservatorship team have suggested that she has because they want to push the conservatorship through. And if that’s the case, then that’s terrifying.”

Britney, who’s former choreographer revealed the ways the conservatorship limits her life, has been under the conservatorship after she had a breakdown following the split from her husband Kevin Federline.

Restrictions on the singer mean she cannot drive, go out alone or make her own financial decisions.

A movement, called #FreeBritney, has been campaigning for the singer, who recently enjoyed a rare outing with her boyfriend, to be freed from the legal restraints.

Meanwhile, Britney has been embroiled in a court battle to get her father removed as the conservator of her estate.

In November, Britney’s lawyer said she was “afraid” of her father and said she would not perform so long as he remained in the role.

But, the court ruled in favour of her father remaining as her conservator. However, the legal battle continues and the star is said to be set to speak on her own behalf at a hearing in the summer.

According to Page Six, Britney’s judge Sam Ingham Judge Brenda Penny: “The conservatee has requested that I seek from the court a status hearing at which she can address the court directly.”
