Carol Kirkwood, 58, became overcome with emotion after she updated Louise Minchin and Annie Emmerson on her injury after she was hit by a car whilst out on her bike last year. The BBC Breakfast weather forecaster was forced to take a break from the show following the incident and hasn’t quite summoned the courage to get back to cycling just yet.

Oh my goodness, I can’t really talk about it…

Speaking on Louise and Annie’s Her Spirit podcast, Carol recalled the “horrific” accident while the trio discussed daily exercise routines.

“Because I’ve damaged my knee and my thumb, I haven’t got back into running but I speed walk and that’s my exercise,” she began.

“I got for it, probably faster than when I was running!”

She explained it makes her feel good to get out in the fresh air, something she admitted she never really appreciated until lockdown.

But there was one thing Carol missed, and that was going out on her bike.

“I hope one day to get back on my bike,” she shrugged, as Louise suggested using a bike coach to help with her confidence.

“You had a really horrid accident,” Louise sympathised.

“And if you hadn’t of had your helmet on, then things could have ended differently.”

Carol breathed a sigh of relief as she nodded: “If I hadn’t of had my helmet on, I would have face planted!

“I have a huge nose as you can see, so my nose hit the deck and had a lovely black bruise on it, but my helmet had a peak at the front and that’s what stopped my face from hitting the ground.”

She stammered as she remembered the exact moment the car ploughed into the back of her: “I won’t ever forget that accident, it was horrific.

“My knee was absolutely battered and there were nerves hanging out of it! It was down to my knee cap!

Louise and Annie winced at the thought, as the weather star continued: “Fortunately my knee cap was OK and I had bruises all over my body but you get over that kind of thing,” she said bravely.

“But sometimes I’ll dream about it and still hear that [noise] of the car hitting the back of my bike…”

She trailed off as she teared up.

“Oh my goodness, I can’t really talk about it…” Carol said as the hosts quickly intervened.

“Oh daring, don’t!” Annie exclaimed, horrified her guest had become so upset.

“We’re sending you a big hug!” Louise added, telling her co-star she loved her.

Carol returned to BBC Breakfast in May last year, after a few weeks off to recover following her terrifying ordeal.

At the time, she explained Louise and Dan Walker on the programme: “I was out on my bike and got knocked off it by a car that drove into me, it was pure accident of course and I got injured.

“This is a great opportunity to say thank you to the three cyclists that helped me immediately after the incident.

“And also the Thames Valley police, that was Chris and also Faye. And the ambulance that tended to me and took me to hospital, that was Miranda and Stewart.

“At Wexham Park Hospital, this man is a genius, his name Peter Foskett-Tharby. I can’t thank you enough and I’m so grateful to you all.”
