Proving their love by getting a tattoo dedicated to their significant other, some stars have regretted their decision, which was probably driven by impulse, after their relationship ended.
AceShowbiz – Tattoo is a mark, figure, design, or word intentionally fixed or placed on the skin. An indelible or permanent tattoo is usually made by inserting tattoo ink, dyes and/or pigments into the dermis layer of the skin to form a design.
One of the oldest forms of art that dated back to Neolithic times, tattoo may be decorative with no special meaning or serving as symbols, marks of status, spiritual devotion and others. Over the years, the way society perceives tattoo has varied immensely.
In modern society, tattoo is often considered as one of the forms to channel freedom of expression. Particularly for those in love, tattoo is often used to symbolize one’s devotion to their significant other.
Unfortunately, unlike tattoo itself, not all relationships are permanent. In many cases, the public has witnessed celebrities commemorating their relationship by getting inked, only to regret it when the relationship is over.
Thus, before making a decision to get one for yourself, let’s take a look at some stars who have removed or covered up a tattoo they got for their ex after their relationship ended.
1. Pete Davidson
Despite a string of broken relationships, Pete Davidson never hesitated to get a tattoo of his significant other. During his whirlwind engagement to Ariana Grande, the comedian paid tribute to the singer’s “Dangerous Woman” album era by getting a Playboy-inspired bunny ears mask tattoo on the left side of his neck.
One week before their split, the “Saturday Night Live” alum changed up the tattoo to a large heart. He added a small lowercase “a” next to the design, perhaps to signal that the tattoo change was not because of a fallout with Ariana. Nevertheless, the couple broke up in October 2018, just four months after getting engaged. He also used to have a tattoo of the phrase “mille tendresse” (French for “a thousand tendernesses”) to match Ariana’s, but after their breakup, he covered it with the word “cursed.”

2. Denise Richards
Moved by Charlie Sheen‘s love gesture by getting her name inked on his left wrist, Denise Richards also got one for him. Her tattoo tribute for the “Spin City” actor was located on her ankle and featured his name “Charlie.”
Just a week after Charlie got his tattoo, the then-pair got married at an outdoor wedding at the Brentwood estate of “Spin City” creator Gary David Goldberg. But their volatile relationship became evident when she filed for divorce in March 2005, when she was pregnant with their second child together. After their divorce was finalized in 2006 and Charlie moved on with Brooke Mueller, the actress got the tattoo on her ankle turned into a fairy.

3. Amber Rose
Amber Rose wore her heart on her sleeve. In March 2013, four months before she married Wiz Khalifa, the model tattoed his face on her upper arm along with a few marijuana leaves. Their marital bliss was cut short when she filed for divorce in September 2014, after welcoming a son in 2013.
The SlutWalk founder initially kept the ink for her ex years after their split, but she decided to cover it up in August 2017. She replaced the Wiz tattoo with another man’s face, but the new one had nothing to do with her romantic relationship. Instead, her new ink features the face of Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash.

4. Travis Barker
Travis Barker‘s body is like an art gallery, which used to keep the history of his relationship with Shanna Moakler. During his relationship with the former Miss USA winner in the early 2000s, he got an ink of her name written in a banner over a giant heart on his arm. After a brief breakup and reconciliation, they eventually divorced in 2008.
Starting in 2020, the Blink-182 drummer has been in a high-profile relationship with Kourtney Kardashian. After the pair got engaged in October 2021, he debuted two new tattoos, an imprint of the reality TV star’s black-lipstick-covered lips and a large black scorpion, over the Shanna tattoo.

5. Kaley Cuoco
After a series of failed relationships, Kaley Cuoco was apparently convinced that Ryan Sweeting was the one. Thus, after they got married in 2013, she decided to get a tattoo of their wedding date in Roman numerals on her back just below the neck. After only two years of marriage, they announced their split and she immediately covered up the tattoo with a moth ink.
Admitting that it was a “mistake,” she told Ellen DeGeneres two months after she filed for divorce, “The [wedding] tattoo was a mistake. I had to cover it, I had to cover it with the wings, which I think turned out OK.” When asked if the moth design signified something, she said that it didn’t mean something special and that she simply needed a big one to cover her old tattoo. “Because it was big enough to cover the numbers…the wings. Big wings,” she explained.

6. Marc Anthony
Jennifer Lopez used to be a big part of Marc Anthony‘s life and also a part of his tattoo collection. At one point during their seven-year relationship, he got her name “Jennifer” inked on the back of his right forearm. The then-spouses, who share 15-year-old twins Emme and Max, separated in 2011 and their divorce was finalized in 2014.
Not one who learned his lesson, the “No Me Ames” crooner covered up the tattoo tribute to J.Lo with the Statue of Liberty ink, dedicated to his then-girlfriend Shannon De Lima, whom he credited for freeing him from his past. He was officially divorced from the model in 2017 after two years of marriage, but he still keeps the Statue of Liberty tattoo.

7. Eva Longoria
Eva Longoria clearly didn’t see the end of her relationship with Tony Parker coming. After marrying the French former professional basketball player in 2007, she filed for divorce in 2010 due to his infidelity. At that time, she already got “nine”, the number of his jersey, tattoed on the back of her neck.
The “Desperate Housewives” alum got two other Tony-celebrating tattooes, one was their wedding date on her wrist and another was the former San Antonio Spurs guard’s initials hidden somewhere on her body. In early 2012, she began to have all three of them removed and they are no longer visible now.
Eva Longoria completely erased the tattoo of Tony Parker’s jersey number.
8. Melanie Griffith
Melanie Griffith was married to Antonio Banderas for almost two decades and she used to have a tattoo to mark her love for him. The 65-year-old actress had a heart-shaped tattoo with the name of the Spanish actor inside it inked on her arm in the 1990s.
But when they called it quits in 2014 with the actress filing for divorce, she immediately began laser treatment to remove the heart tattoo dedicated to the “Puss in Boots” star. After gradually disappearing from her arm, the tattoo was recently completed replaced with a new one, which shows the names of her four children arranged in crossword style.

9. Justin Bieber
Justin Bieber used to express his love for Selena Gomez with song and tattoo. In 2013, during their on-and-off relationship which lasted for several years, the Canadian pop star had the actress’ face with wings around it inked on his left arm. After calling it quits for good with Selena in 2018, the “Love Yourself” singer married Hailey Bieber (Hailey Baldwin) in the same year.
However, fans were curious as to why Justin still has the Selena tattoo. In an interview with GQ in 2016, the 29-year-old admitted that he tried to cover up his ex’s face “with some shading, but people still know.” He later told Ellen DeGeneres that at the end of day every tattoo has a story to tell even if it is not the favorite one.

10. Megan Fox
Megan Fox used to prove her love for Brian Austin Green with a tattoo in an intimate part. She had his name “Brian” inked in dramatic lettering on her pelvis in 2015, before they split in 2020. The former couple, who shares three sons together, is still on good terms as they co-parent their kids, but they have since moved on with their respective new partner.
The “Jennifer’s Body” star has been dating Machine Gun Kelly since 2020 and got engaged to him last year, but it’s not until recently that she finally got rid of the last trace of her past relationship. Her tattoo artist took to Instagram to unveil an intricate design of snake and flowers in place of her old one.
11. Angelina Jolie
Angelina Jolie always went bold when it comes to her love relationship. When she was married to Billy Bob Thornton, she had a tattoo of his name and a dragon on her arm to profess her love for the “Sling Blade” actor.
After they got divorced in 2003, the “Eternals” star covered up the tattoo with the birthplace coordinates of her children and her then-partner Brad Pitt. However, her relationship with the “Moneyball” star also came to an end when they split in 2016. She has since removed his birth coordinates from her arm, but still keeps her children’s.
