Chadwick, who was globally famous as Black Panther in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, died tragically in 2020 at the age of 43 after a secret cancer battle.
‘All of our students here are so inspired by Chadwick Boseman, a Howard grad who was so committed to this university,’ said Phylicia during Tuesday’s broadcast.
‘And as you know, Chadwick was nominated last year for best actor and we are so honored to announce the nominees in this category.’
John Woods III, who is studying for a BFA in acting, delivered the list of nominees – Javier Bardem in Being The Ricardos, Benedict Cumberbatch in The Power Of The Dog, Andrew Garfield in tick, tick…BOOM!, Will Smith in King Richard and Denzel Washington in The Tragedy Of Macbeth.

After making the story public in 2018, Chadwick said on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon that ‘I’ve basically been holding this secret for my whole career.
‘Phylicia taught Chadwick at Howard and said after his death in an interview with NME: ‘I do hope that the young people will come to know and understand what he really cared about. He was so intelligent.
She added: ‘He wanted to know every single thing there was to know about theatre – all of it – and he did not refuse instruction or information from any source or sector. He was so completely open and he loved working with young people.’
