Bucks Fizz star Cheryl Baker, 67, has shared her brutal thoughts on the UK’s previous entries to the Eurovision Song Contest. Cheryl, along with her bandmates, were crowned the winners of the competition in 1981 with their song, Making Your Mind Up.

I don’t think we have been putting in the greatest songs, to be perfectly frank

Since Bucks Fizz took the trophy home, the United Kingdom has only had one winner in 1997, when Katrina and the Waves won by a margin of 70 points.

In 2003 however, the UK received “nul points” following Jemini’s on-stage difficulties that meant the group were unable to hear themselves.

Cheryl, who is now part of The Fizz alongside Mike Nolan and Jay Aston, is getting back onto the stage following the easing of the coronavirus lockdown restrictions.

The singer, who recently revealed she was turned down for a role on BBC’s EastEnders, shared that she will be tuning into the grand final on BBC One.

“I actually think that this year we will be on the left-hand side of the board,” Cheryl said.

The Bethnal Green born singer added: “Whether James [Newman] wins or not I don’t know, but I think he has got a really strong song, he is really credible, the rest of Europe know him because of the songs he has written and co-written.

“So I think this year it might be a fairer vote, I think the jury vote is usually fair, and to be honest I don’t think we have been putting in the greatest songs, to be perfectly frank, for the past two years.

“Although I liked SuRie with Storm, I thought that was a great song.”

Speaking to The Mirror, Cheryl went on to add that the UK often ends up at the bottom of the leaderboard before joking that we “need to get Europe on our side and we need them to like us again.”

Bucks Fizz was formed purposely for Eurovision but the group were later propelled to international stardom after winning the competition.

“When you win the Eurovision Song Contest everybody wants a piece of you,” she explained.

The iconic singer believes that the group topped the leader boards due to the fact she and Jay Aston whipped their skirts off.

Bucks Fizz won the contest in 1981, the same year that Prince Charles married Lady Diana Spencer at St Paul’s Cathedral.

Speaking of the new era in British history, Cheryl said: “Winning Eurovision, Charles and Diana getting married, there were so many positive things that year.

“Our song was hoppy and happy, we were in bright colours, skipping around the stage dancing, boys throwing us in the chair, and then the money shot the skirts coming off.”

While many believe that a singer entering the Eurovision Song Contest could potentially damage their career, Cheryl says she doesn’t believe this will be the case for James Newman.

James, 35, already boasts an impressive career, having landed a Brit Award in 2014 after co-writing Rudimental’s hit record, Waiting All Night.

He later went on to co-write the 2014 hit single Blame, featuring Calvin Harris and James’ brother, John Newman.

As one of the “Big Five” countries, the UK qualified for the grand final which will be held on May 22, live from Rotterdam Ahoy in the Netherlands.

Eurovision Song Contest airs 8pm on Saturday 22nd May on BBC One
