Chris Evans is doing the rounds for his new film Ghosted in which he stars with Ana de Armas. I find the premise funny and like that she’s the spy and he’s the victim in distress, so I’ll check it out. Fortunately, Good Morning America knows how to promote a film properly so while interviewing Chris, they asked about his adorable pup Dodger. When they returned from break, George Stephanopoulos and Robin Roberts cut to photos of Chris and Dodger, melting everyone’s hearts, and asked CapChris to retell the story of how he and Dodger found each other. We know, of course, that Chris and Dodger locked eyes in a shelter while he was filming in Savannah. But Robin wanted to know how Dodger got his name. Chris said it was a Dickens reference… by way of Disney, of course. The pup resembled the dog who played Dodger from Oliver & Company, which was Disney’s canine take on Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist.

During a recent interview, he opened up about how he named the dog, and the way that a less well-known Disney movie inspired him.

The conversation turned to how he named Dodger, and the inspiration came from Disney’s Oliver & Company, which was inspired by Charles Dickens‘ Oliver Twist.

“He was a street dog. He was a little orphan. You know, the Artful Dodger is kind of that… I wish I could just say it was a Charles Dickens reference. It’s actually a more animated reference. They did a movie – Oliver & Company – the movie I grew up on that’s based on Oliver Twist. The dog that played the Artful Dodger kind of looked like Dodger,” he explained.

Was there any doubt that Chris Evans, Disney superfan, named his pet after a Disney character? As soon as he mentioned the name, we all knew there was a Disney link. This is an A-List, in-demand actor who still takes dates to Disneyland, for Pete’s sake. Had he tried to name Dodger something outside of the Disney Universe, his speech would have slurred and spun itself back into Disney-speak. However, Dodger is also the perfect name for Chris’ dog. He does resemble the cartoon mutt. Dodger and Dickens’ Artful Dodger were from the streets, but had a protective sense to look out for Oliver. Plus, Dodger the cartoon was voiced by Billy Joel and you can’t get much cooler than that. So Disney connection or not, it s also a great name for the little guy.

I posted the clip of Chris talking about Dodger below. I love that he attempts to enter the conversation about his dog calm and collected but the minute a photo of Dodger is put on the screen, Chris falls apart. I will never not be moved by how much Chris adores that dog. Oh, and I see why Dodger’s getting his name out there, looks like he just got his first sponsorship with Jinx Dog Food. Get those Benjamins, Dodger!
