Jada Pinkett Smith wants nothing to do with the ongoing feud between her husband Will Smith and comedian Chris Rock.
Nearly one year after the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air alum slapped the comic at the Academy Awards, Chris returned to the stage for his live Netflix comedy special, Selective Outrage, on Saturday night — and he had plenty of jabs to throw the couple’s way. From joking about Jada’s affair with August Alsina to commenting on the most buzzworthy controversy of 2022, the slap heard across the world, the stand-up star’s jokes certainly packed a punch!
In the aftermath, Jada’s camp is now speaking out and claiming Chris has taken things WAY too far… but not exactly for the reasons you might be expecting!
On Monday, a source close to the actress sat down with People to talk all things Selective Outrage. Despite the fact Jada has very much been at the center of her husband’s latest controversy (as a reminder, Will slapped Chris after he made a joke about Jada’s bald head), the insider argued the Red Table Talk host has had no involvement in the fight. In fact, they are placing ALL the blame on Chris — and not just ’cause he was the one dishing out the jabs… but because he’s “obsessed with her”?! The source shared:
“Jada has had no part in all of this other than being heckled. Chris is obsessed with her and that’s been going on for almost 30 years.”
To prove their point even further, they added:
“Look where he chose to film his Netflix special. Her hometown . Obsessed.”
Damn! They really think Chris was trying to prove a point by hosting his show at Baltimore’s Hippodrome Theater?? That would be petty AF! But if it’s true, it sure seems to have worked. The location has apparently gotten under Jada’s team’s skin!
The source then went on to clap back at some of the jokes made during the stand-up show, including the claim The Matrix Revolutions alum once asked the 58-year-old not to host the Oscars during 2016’s #OscarsSoWhite movement. During the special, Rock quipped:
“Years ago, his wife said I should quit the Oscars. I shouldn’t host ’cause her man didn’t get nominated for Concussion. And then he gives me a f**king concussion.”
Oof!
As you may recall, in 2016, Will was snubbed of a nomination for his role in Concussion, as were many other Black creatives. At the time, Jada showed her support for the movement — but she apparently didn’t have any issues with Chris hosting the show, the source noted:
“Back in 2016 she helped start a movement with the Academy Awards by questioning why there are so few Black members, and Chris took it to this?”
The confidant continued:
“She never asked Chris to not host the Oscars ever. She publicly said in a Facebook post at the time Chris would be a great Oscars host and is perfect for the job.”
Hmm. Two very different sides to the same story… Elsewhere in the show, the Grown Ups alum argued Jada deserved to be made fun of, insisting she was the one to start things:
“I did some jokes about her. Who gives a f**k? That’s how it is: She starts it, I finish it. That’s what the f**k happened. Nobody’s pickin’ on this bitch. She started this s**t. Nobody was pickin’ on her.”
How exactly did she start it though?! Will’s the one who laid a hand on him! Just saying. The source also noted how they “were shocked at how many times Chris used the word bitch in referring to Jada.” Despite the harsh words spoken over the weekend, Jada is keeping her head held high and attention focused on the future, the insider concluded:
“Right now Jada is focused on her book that will come out this year.”
A book that includes her juicy thoughts on all this drama?! We hope so!
We’re glad she’s not too affected by the jokes! As mentioned earlier this week, other reports have claimed Will’s attempts to make amends with the Everybody Hates Chris star have gone unreciprocated, so it does seem like the latter has no intentions of having a heart-to-heart and reconciling anytime soon. Thoughts? Do you think Chris is “obsessed” with Jada? Sound OFF (below)!
