Christine McGuinness ‘will serve up chicken nuggets and chips for Christmas dinner’

Christine McGuinness is looking forward to a family Christmas with her three children, twins Leo and Penelope, nine, and six year old Felicity.

The documentary-maker and campaigner will make the day as normal a routine as possible for her autistic children – including what food they eat.

A reluctance to try new foods is a common trait in autistic children, so this Christmas she’ll be sticking to meals they’re accustomed to rather than encouraging them to enjoy a traditional turkey roast.

“I don’t think they should have to fit in with tradition or what everybody else has. I think your Christmas dinner should be whatever you’d like to eat and I want them to enjoy it,” she saId.

“If they want chicken nuggets and chips, then that’s what I’m going to give them.”

Christine, who will also be spending Christmas with her ex Paddy McGuinness, told OK! about what's on her children's Christmas lists.

“Penelope absolutely loves anything to do with Pokémon. Whether it’s Pokémon pyjamas, cards or a game, she’ll be over the moon with that,” she said.

“Leo just loves Minecraft at the minute. He’s very similar to Penelope – anything with Minecraft on and he’d be happy. Felicity is still obsessed with dolls and always has been. She’s a proper girlie girl.”

Christine and Paddy, who announced their split in the summer, are determined to put their children first and is one of the reasons why they'll be spending the festive period together.

“That’s what the children are used to,” Christine explained.

“We don’t know what the future holds or how it’s going to be moving forward, but we’ll try and keep things as normal as possible. We’re amicable. I’m quite happy for him to be there with the children and it’s nice for them to see Mummy and Daddy just being alright. We can sit and have a cup of tea together and that’s fine."

Speaking further on the end of their marriage, Christine added: "We’ve dealt with the hardest bits in private, which I’m glad about. You’ve just got to keep moving forward, keep smiling and focusing on all the positives. I really believe life is good and I’m very blessed.”

But she explained things are "amicable" between the pair.

“We’re on good terms,” she said. “We’re trying to both be there for the children and we want to co-parent as well as we can. We want to make sure that we’re both around the children whenever we can be."
