When Stevie Nicks and Kim Anderson said their vows in their 1983 wedding ceremony, many believed the couple was making a mistake. The relationship was sudden and born of grief. Her bandmates, including friend and confidant Christine McVie, thought Nicks’ wedding was ill-advised and difficult to understand. For this reason, McVie chose not to get Nicks a wedding present.
Many people thought Stevie Nicks’ wedding was a mistake
In 1983, Nicks married Anderson three months after his wife and her best friend, Robin Snyder Anderson, died of leukemia. The loss deeply shook them, especially because Robin gave birth to a son, Matthew, two days before her death. Nicks believed that by marrying Anderson, she could help raise Matthew. Everyone around her felt that she was making a mistake.
“It was insanity,” Nicks told The Guardian. “Everybody was furious. It was a completely ridiculous thing. And it was just because I had this crazy, insane thought that Robin would want me to take care of Matthew. But the fact is, Robin would not have wanted me to be married to a guy I didn’t love. And therefore accidentally break that guy’s heart, too.”
Christine McVie admitted that she didn’t get a wedding present
Nicks would later explain that she knew that she and Anderson were not in love.
“We didn’t get married because we were in love, we got married because we were grieving and it was the only way that we could feel like we were doing anything,” she told Vulture.
Those around her, including McVie, understood the reasoning behind the wedding and thought it was a mistake. McVie described the whole affair as “very, very bizarre.”
“She thought it was what Robin would have wanted,” McVie told Rolling Stone. “But they’d known each other for a long time, and it didn’t seem like crazy love to me. I didn’t buy her a wedding present.”
Despite her doubts about Nicks and Anderson as a couple, McVie did attend the wedding. She and Nicks’ former romantic partner Mick Fleetwood were the only two members of Fleetwood Mac in attendance.
Christine McVie and Stevie Nicks have both gotten divorced
Three months after the wedding, Nicks and Anderson realized they were making a mistake. Nicks believes she received a message from Robin, telling her to end the relationship.
“‘You’ve lost your mind,’” Nicks imagined her friend saying. “‘What were you thinking?’”
McVie has also been divorced. Soon after Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham joined Fleetwood Mac, McVie and her husband John McVie separated.
“We just reached a point where we couldn’t be in the same room together,” she explained. “We’d probably spent more time with one another than most couples who have lived together for twenty-five years. We had no individuality, no separation.”
Still, she explained that she held no ill will toward McVie and was happy when he remarried in 1978.
“John, he’ll always have a soft spot for me, as I always will for him,” she said.
In 1986, McVie married songwriter, Eddy Quintela. They remained together until 2003 and often wrote music together. The divorce prompted McVie to rejoin Fleetwood Mac after 16 years of retirement.
