Singer and actress Miley Cyrus is no stranger to controversy — her name can often be found in the headlines not just for her musical achievements (of which she has many) but for her various romantic entanglements. Who could forget the melee caused by Cyrus’ nearly 10-year on-again, off-again, on-again, off-again relationship with actor Liam Hemsworth, or Cyrus’ subsequent fling with Kaitlynn Carter? (via PopSugar).
Most recently, Cyrus was linked to her friend, Australian singer Cody Simpson, whom she dated for 10 months. The two were first seen engaging in some PDA in October 2019, and from then on were not shy about showing their affection for each other both online and off; they even got matching trident tattoos as an homage to Simpson’s poetry book, Prince Neptune: Poetry and Prose (via Elle).
However, Cyrus and Simpson’s tryst was not long for this world. As a source told Us Weekly upon their split, the two artists simply “realized they’re better off as friends than dating each other.”
Leaving things on good terms
If anyone’s searching for the drama behind the Miley Cyrus and Cody Simpson split, it appears as though they’re not going to find it. And who better to look for confirmation of that then Simpson’s sister, Alli. “I’m a protective sister but I’ve also met her a bunch of times and she’s been nothing but beautiful to me,” Alli Simpson shared while on the Australian program I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! “I’m not gonna like, judge on what I read or see and stuff, I’m only gonna go off what Cody says and he loved what they had” (via E!).
For her part, it seems as though Cyrus did, too. Not long after her breakup, Cyrus addressed the relationship head on in an Instagram live, citing each of their young ages as one reason for the separation. “Like everybody else at this age, we’re just deciding who we wanna be with our lives, what we wanna do with our lives,” Cyrus said, in part. “And so, don’t make it some drama story if next week we’re out hanging out or getting pizza. We’ve been friends for 10 years and we’re gonna continue to be friends.”
So while that should answer all your questions about the end of Cyrus and Simpson’s romance, one question still remains: Are any songs on Cyrus’s new album Plastic Hearts about Simpson? The answer is … well, maybe.
