Courteney Cox may be best known for her iconic role on Friends playing perfectionist Monica Gellar. But acting isn’t the only thing Cox is known for. She is also connected to the music world, from appearing in the Counting Crows’ video “A Long December” (and briefly dating band member Adam Duritz) to her early appearance being brought on stage to dance in Bruce Springsteen’s “Dancing in the Dark” video. Cox has even attended the Grammy Awards, though not as many times as her Friends co-star Matthew Perry. Today, she’s still connected to the music industry through her partner, Snow Patrol singer Johnny McDaid.
Courteney Cox attended the Grammys with Johnny McDaid
Courteney Cox and Johnny McDaid first got together in 2013. Previously, the Friends actor was married to her Scream co-star, David Arquette. McDaid proposed to Cox in 2014.
In February 2015, Cox went to the Grammys with McDaid. He was nominated for Album of the Year for Ed Sheeran’s X. Later that year, the pair called off their engagement. However, they later reunited and have been together ever since.
Cox isn’t the only ‘Friends’ star to attend the awards show
While Cox may be the Friends star who is the most visible in the music industry, she isn’t the only one who has had the privilege to attend the Grammys. Like plenty of other actors, a few members of the long-running sitcom have appeared at the annual event.
In 1996, Lisa Kudrow attended the Grammy Awards. At this time, Friends was one of the most popular shows on TV. But Matthew Perry takes the cake.
The actor attended the Grammy Awards in 2002 and 2004, both times as a presenter. In 2002, he presented alongside Britney Spears, announcing the award for Best Performance by a Pop Duo or Group.
McDaid owes his relationship with Cox to Ed Sheeran
In 2022, McDaid earned his second Grammy nomination, this time for Song of the Year. Once again, he collaborated with Ed Sheeran, on the singers’ hit “Bad Habits.” Other songs they’ve penned together include “Shape of You” and “The Joker and the Queen.”
In a story that’s been told many different times in various ways, Cox and McDaid owe their relationship, in part, to Ed Sheeran. In March 2022, Cox went on Howard Stern and explained how she and McDaid met at a star-studded get-together at her house, initiated by Sheeran.
“Ed said, ‘can I have some friends over this week?’ and I said of course,” Cox explained. I remember seeing Johnny and going, ‘Oh wow, he’s really intense, he’s got those eyes, and he was playing the piano, and I thought, ‘he’s really, really handsome.’” Although they didn’t start dating right away, Sheeran’s salon planted the seed.
While McDaid allegedly wasn’t a Friends fan, the couple’s mutual friend certainly is. Sheeran and Cox recreated “the routine” in 2021, sharing it on social media after Friends: The Reunion aired.
