Strictly Come Dancing judge Craig Revel Horwood has declared on the Access All Areas show on FUBAR Radio: “I think dance is a platform for anybody no matter who you are or where you’re from.”

The former drag queen elaborated in reference to Strictly: “We could go down the transgender route.”

I think dance is a platform for anybody

The BBC show has been keen to update and modernise its format in recent years, including the addition of same-sex couples, represented by John Whaite and Johannes Radebe in 2021.

It has also sought to be inclusive of the deaf community, by featuring EastEnders actress Rose Ayling-Ellis this year as its first ever deaf contestant in the history of the show.

However, Craig firmly believes that the show could go further.

The enthusiastic ballroom dancer added: “Humans have been dancing since the cavemen were dancing around fires for fertility and rain.

“We’re social, we like dancing, we like celebrating and I think it’s time to do that.”

The public will see the proof of that statement when the semi-final airs this weekend.

“I’m really looking forward to seeing who the audience chooses to put through because I think it won’t be down to the judges this year,” Craig mused.

“The judges are very equal now and there’s no one standing out that’s really terrible.

“It’s gonna be a really fine line I think to see who actually gets to the winning line.”

Meanwhile, despite giving him a measly score of six in the last episode – a controversial decision that got audiences going – the TV judge admitted that he “even loves Dan [Walker].”

“I know that Dan is loved by every housewife in the UK,” Craig suggested playfully.

“He has the full support of them which is fantastic and that’s why the audience get 50% of the vote.”

Viewers were previously tickled when Dan admitted he had accidentally hit an audience member with his cane during a performance, and he has won them over with his journey on the show.

Craig admitted that although he does have a reputation for being a harsh marker, he has enjoyed relaxing the atmosphere more lately.

The 56-year-old elaborated: “People who have never danced are really dancing up around the 8s and the 9s which is insane.

“I’m probably appearing to be a lot kinder and nicer because of that.”

Meanwhile Craig also spoke of his relief to see Strictly back on TV screens after the pandemic, stating that “people need entertainment”.

The judge, who recently battled coronavirus himself, also added: “People need a life again.”

“I’m really proud to be a part of it still and I absolutely love it,” he continued.

“I wouldn’t want to change my Saturday job for anything.”

Catch Strictly this Saturday evening on BBC One at 6:40pm for the next episode, or, for a greater taste of Craig’s judging personality, the dance-off show airs on Sunday at 7:20pm.
