David Beckham declined the chance to jump ahead in a miles-long queue to see the Queen’s coffin.
The 47 year old decided to wait for 14 hours among thousands of Brits to see Her Majesty Lying-in-State in Westminster Hall.
A source told the Sun: "David was offered a queue jump hall pass – and the opportunity to go in with an MP – but turned it down to queue.
“He got there at 2am and felt it was really important to be alongside everyone else for such a moving moment.”
The former footballer, sported a flat cap and black suit as he waited to pay his respect.
At the 12 hour mark he told ITV News' Neil Connery: “I was so lucky I was able to have a few moments in my life to be around Her Majesty.
“A sad day but it's a day to remember the incredible legacy she left."
David continued: "I grew up in a household of royalists and I was brought up that way."
He also told ITV news: "I thought by coming at 2:00 am it was going to be a little bit quieter – I was wrong.
The star jokingly said his "knees were ok” from standing in the long queue but the same couldn't be said for his back.
David recounted how fortunate he was to have met the Queen and highlighted how special it was to hear the national anthem when playing for the England football team.
"You know I always wanted to represent my country, to be captain in my country, and every time that we stood there when we wore those Three Lion shirts, and I had my armband and we sang, you know, 'God save our Queen’, that was something that meant so much to us.”
When asked by ITV if he has any funny anecdotes about his time with the late monarch, he discussed receiving his OBE.
He said: “To receive my OBE, I took my grandparents with me, who were the ones that really brought me up to be a huge royalist and a fan of the royal family, and obviously I had my wife there as well.
“To step up, to get my honour, but then also Her Majesty, to ask questions, to talk, I was so lucky that I was able to have a few moments like that in my life, to be around Her Majesty.
“Because we can all see with the love that has been shown, how special she is and how special she was and the legacy that she leaves behind.
“It’s a sad day, but it’s a day for us to remember the incredible legacy that she’s left.”
