Indigenous Australian actor David Gulpilil, who was was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2017, had died at the age of 68 as tributes poured in for the groundbreaking actor. The on-screen star is best known for his roles in Crocodile Dundee and Rabbitt Proof Fence.
The “iconic” star’s death was confirmed Monday in a statement by South Australian Premier Steven Marshall.
It read: “It is with deep sadness that I share with the people of South Australia the passing of an iconic, once-in-a-generation artist who shaped the history of Australian film and Aboriginal representation on-screen – David Gulpilil Ridjimiraril Dalaithngu (AM).”
He introduced the world to his culture in his breakout role in Nicolas Roeg’s Walkabout and he made his mark in the 1986 blockbuster Crocodile Dundee.
