Princess Diana would have been “appalled” byPrince Harry’s memoir, a royal expert has claimed.
Author Tom Bower said Harry's mother – the late former Princess of Wales – would have been “absolutely outraged” by the autobiography – entitled Spare and due outon 10 January next year.
The memoir’s publisher, Penguin Random House, said the book would be full of “insight” and “revelation” – told with “raw, unflinching honesty”.
The Royal Family are said to be"preparing themselves" for any potential bombshells that come out in the book – which is being published just four months beforeKing Charles’ official coronation.
But Harry, 38, is not the first royal to release a book that sent shockwaves through the monarchy.
His mother Diana stunned The Firm with the 1992 publication of Andrew Morton’s biography, Diana: Her True Story – to which she contributed.
Despite the parallels, author Tom – whose royal books include Rebel Prince and Revenge – claimed Diana would have taken a dim view of Harry’s autobiography.
He added this was because her criticisms were aimed only at Charles and not the institution of the monarchy as a whole.
Speaking toOK!, he said: “I think Diana would have been appalled – absolutely outraged.
“She never criticised the Queen, she never criticised the monarchy. She was never disloyal to the royal family.”
Former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond, on the other hand, said she believed Diana would not have objected to Harry’s memoir – and may have even been a cheerleader for it.
Also speaking to OK!, she said: "She wouldn’t really be able to criticise, would she, as she pretty much did the same thing?”
"She told her own story, albeit covertly, so she couldn’t blame him. She’d probably cheer him on.
"She’d probably feel sad he’d felt the need to write the book and that, in a way, history has repeated itself. Like Harry, she was unhappy within the confines of the royal family – albeit for different reasons."
Harry’s book was originally due out in October this year but was put on hold following the death of Queen Elizabeth II in September – with Harry reportedly scrambling to make last-minute changes.
Its provocative title appears to allude to Harry feeling like the “spare” prince to his 40 year old brotherPrince William, the heir to the throne.
About the memoir, Harry has said: “I’m writing this not as the prince I was born but as the man I have become. I’ve worn many hats over the years, both literally and figuratively, and my hope is that in telling my story – the highs and lows, the mistakes, the lessons learned – I can help show that no matter where we come from, we have more in common than we think.”
