Doctor Who is one of the most coveted roles within British television. Currently, Jodie Whittaker is the Doctor and her role is groundbreaking as she is the first woman to feature as the lead.
Another move in the right direction was casting Jo Martin’s character Ruth as another incarnation of the Doctor to 13 (Jodie) – a pivotal moment as she is the first person of color to appear as the Doctor.
Jodie has been thriving in her leading role since 2017, and while there’s been no confirmation of her plan to leave, co-star Mandip Gill said that we could see a woman of colour in the role when it’s recast in the future.
Speaking on BBC Radio 4, when asked about the subject, Mandip explained that she could see a woman of color leading the way for diversity in Doctor Who’s future casting.

“I think there’s a long way to go but there’s definitely room for change. And actually, I think at the BBC and at Doctor Who they are very open and forward-thinking, so yes,” she said.
Mandip plays the role of Yasmin Khan on Doctor Who, and she went on to explain how it felt to be cast in the role, after filming a short role on Casualty a few months beforehand.
She said: “I couldn’t believe my luck. I’d filmed Casualty the January before and that was in the same building.

“We were at the top of the hallway and when I finished Casualty, they walked us to the canteen and they were like, ‘Don’t go in that door, that’s for the Doctor Who people!’
“There and then I thought I’d never be in Doctor Who… Cut to six or seven months later and you know what? I’m like ‘Don’t go up there… that’s for Casualty!'”
Doctor Who airs on BBC One in the UK and BBC America in the US. Series 13 is due to premiere later this year.
