Sylvester McCoy, 77, has exclusively shared with Express.co.uk that former Doctor Who actor Peter Davison, 69, advised him to “only do three years” as the Time Lord. The Hobbit star followed the guidance before the series was axed by the BBC during his tenurewhich left him “slightly miffed”.

They twisted my arm

Sylvester explained: “Peter Davison [who played Doctor Who before him] told me, ‘Only do three years’.

“So I thought when I signed on, I was going to do three years.

“In the second year, the producer came to me and said, ‘Listen, we like what you’re doing, so we want to book you for the fourth year’, and I thought, ‘Hmmm I’m not sure’.

“He went, ‘If you don’t do the fourth year, you won’t do the third year.’

“So they twisted my arm, and I agreed to do the fourth year.”

However, Sylvester was less than impressed after the BBC all of a sudden decided to put the show on hiatus.

He continued: “I was really really miffed when they came through and said they had decided not to do the fourth year, after them twisting my arm.

“It looked negative on my part. It made it look like it was my fault, but it was to do with politics.”

Express.co.uk has contacted a representative for the BBC for comment.

Sylvester played the iconic role back in the 1980s, before It was revived in 2005 with Christopher Eccleston playing the Time Lord and Billie Piper as his assistant, Rose Tyler.

Now the Scottish actor is appearing in thriller movie The Owners alongside Game Of Thrones star Maisie Williams.

Opening up on the experience of filming with the actress, he said: “It was great, Maisie ‘Amazing’ Williams is what I call her. She knows the industry backwards.

“I think her future as an actress is going to be great,” he added.

The film focuses on Dr Richard Huggins and his wife Ellen (played by Rita Tushingham) who leave their house one night, only for it to be robbed by a gang of youngsters.

However, the tables are turned once the elderly couple comes home to discover the home raiders and opts to take them hostage.

Meanwhile, Sylvester has found himself “enjoying” the current lockdown restrictions despite his original reservations about being unable to travel.

He explained: “I thought I would hate it because I have spent most of my life travelling.

“What’s really surprised me is, I’m rather shocked I don’t mind my own company.”

As for his next project, the actor is uncertain what the future holds amid the coronavirus pandemic, which has caused many productions to be halted.

Sylvester divulged: “Who knows! There’s a short film I want to do but who knows what will happen now!”
