Dominic West Confirms 'The Crown' Will Feature Charles and Camilla's Tampongate Scandal

In case you’ve been wondering, yes: The Crown’s upcoming fifth season will be covering King Charles and Queen Camilla’s phone sex scandal, aka “tampongate.” For those unfamiliar (consider yourselves blessed), “tampongate” went down in 1993, when a “sexy” phone call between Charles and Camilla, recorded in 1989, was leaked to the press.

There’s been some speculation about whether The Crown would include the scandal, but looks like they fully do!

Dominic West (who plays Charles in season 5) confirmed as much to Entertainment Weekly, saying “I remember thinking it was something so sordid and deeply, deeply embarrassing [at the time]. Looking back on it, and having to play it, what you’re conscious of is that the blame was not with these two people, two lovers, who were having a private conversation. What’s really [clear now] is how invasive and disgusting was the press’s attention to it, that they printed it out verbatim and you could call a number and listen to the actual tape. I think it made me extremely sympathetic towards the two of them and what they’d gone through.”

Because you’re doubtless wondering, a snippet of Charles and Camilla’s convo can be found this way. But yeah, it pretty much involves Charles telling Camilla that he wants to live “inside your trousers” and potentially come back as “a Tampax.” The leaked tape obviously caused quite a scandal at the time, so it’ll definitely be interesting to see how The Crown handles it.

Bye!
