EastEnders legend ‘signs up for Strictly’ – 17 years after soap exit

EastEnders actor Nigel Harman, who played the tragic Dennis Rickman up until 2006, is reportedly joining this year's Strictly Come Dancing series.

With the ballroom competition's launch show traditionally airing towards the end of summer, it's right about this time of year that the rumour mill starts making a noise.

A source has now told The Mail on Sunday: "Nigel is the perfect middle-aged hunk. He is handsome but also charming. He's the kind of guy that those watching at home will fall in love with and you always need one of those.

"He is among the first to confirm and he turns 50 this summer so it is a challenge of his own, too. The line-up is going to be a great mix."

The BBC declined to comment when contacted by OK!

Nigel, 49, isn't only known for his days on Albert Square, though, because the star also enjoyed parts in Downton Abbey (as Mr. Green) and Casualty (Dr. Max Christie).

His experience in the West End should serve him well if he does compete on Strictly, after playing Simon Cowell in I Can't Sing! The X Factor Musical back in 2014.

The latest Strictly reports comes after it was suggested last December that Matt and Emma Willis were "in the running".

"Strictly are desperate to get a celebrity couple on the show and Emma and Matt were in negotiations for the last series," said a source for The Sun. "It was virtually a done deal but then Matt was cast in the theatre show 2:22 A Ghost Story and they had to back out.

"Strictly would love to have them back on board for next year's show and Emma and Matt have said if they can make it work they would jump at the chance. Bosses on the show are always looking at ways to keep the format fresh and they loved the idea of having a celebrity couple competing against one another."

Busted band member Matt, 40, made headlines recently following the broadcast of his documentary Fighting Addiction.

Online reactions included one person "in absolute bits" after seeing Emma, 47, supporting her troubled husband.

"Sat on the sofa literally in tears at how much Matt & Emma clearly love each other. What a remarkable couple. #FightingAddiction" and "Literally in tears watching your story. Seen so many struggle. You’re story will really help people. #FightingAddiction," read two more tweets.

Announcing his self-imposed exile from social media, Matt later wrote to his fanbase: "I am having some down time and not on social that much right now. Thanks for all your incredible messages about The Doc. Sorry I cannot answer all of them. I am not a trained therapist or counsellor. I am just a drug addict trying to stay clean.

"If you need help now, there are links at the bottom of the iPlayer videos. Talking about these things is a big step in the right direction… talk to someone… if they can't help you. Talk to someone else…"
