Music legend Elton John has called the Vatican’s stance against blessing same-sex marriages “hypocrisy.”
In a statement on Monday replying to a question if members of the Catholic clergy can bless gay marriages, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith said the Catholic Church does not have the power to bless same-sex unions. God “does not and cannot bless sin,” according to the statement approved by Pope Francis.
“How can the Vatican refuse to bless gay marriages because they ‘are sin’, yet happily make a profit from investing millions in Rocketman – a film which celebrates my finding happiness from my marriage to David??” John said on Twitter, referring to his biopic Rocketman, which highlights the iconic musician’s marriage to his long time manager and husband, David Furnish. He completed his tweet by adding the hashtag “hypocrisy.”
The Twitter post was accompanied by screenshots of reports featuring the Vatican’s refusal to bless same-sex marriages and the Vatican investing millions in the production of two films: Men in Black: International and Rocketman.
