Jeff Hordley is much loved for his performance as Cain Dingle on Emmerdale, a role he has played for over 20 years. However, in an unearthed chat, the star opened up about almost packing in acting, before his wife and Emmerdale co-star Zoe Henry stopped him.

Jeff admitted his struggles in his first few years after leaving drama school.

After graduating in 1997 from Manchester Metropolitan University, he landed a few roles in Coronation Street and Always and Everyone.

However, it was in 2000 that he landed his big role on Emmerdale.

Speaking about this period, Jeff opened up in an unearthed interview about how “tough” it was.

He said: “I had two tough years where I was going to give up.

“Two tough years after drama school with not much work at all.

“And it was thanks to my wife Zoe, and to my mum and to my uncle John who just kind of said, ‘You know, after three years in drama school, why are you giving it up?’

“I was just frustrated with sitting on your backside not doing anything.

“And there was a period where the phone was going more for DJ than it was for acting.”

Looking back on this time now, Jeff told Mik Artistik’s Ego Podcast in May 2021 how he feels he should have enjoyed this time more.

He added: “I look back on now and go, ‘You should have enjoyed that more’.

“But I was too busy wanting to be an actor.”

Jeff credited his wife Zoe with helping him carry on acting.

Zoe also stars in Emmerdale as vet Rhona Goskirk, which she started in back in 2001.

The actress has appeared on and off in the soap, starring in other dramas like The Bill, Coronation Street and even EastEnders.

However, she returned to play Rhona in 2010, which she has starred in ever since.

The pair first met at drama school and later married in 2003.

Together, they have two children, Violet and Stan.

The couple often share updates about their life on social media, including their work on the allotment.

Jeff has Crohn’s disease, which means the pair grow a lot of their own food as a method of managing symptoms.
