Emmerdale actress Paige Sandu, 24, has told how she upset her grandmother after her ITV character was revealed as the culprit behind the Yorkshire village’s mysterious killings. Paige joined the ITV soap in 2020 as village nurse Meena Jutla and has since shown her darker side, as she murdered two of the Yorkshire Dales-based village’s residents.

Paige’s on-screen character was recently revealed as being behind a series of murders in the sleepy village.
Addressing the murders that Meena has committed, the actress shared how her character’s underhanded antics upset a certain family member.
Paige said: “My nan was upset, because she’s watched Emmerdale for years and kept saying to my mum, ‘I’m so happy Paige is in the show, there are all these deaths going on and she just comes on for a little bit of comedy.’
“My mum was like, ‘Er, no, just wait…’
The actress candidly went on to add that despite being “impressed”, they’re also slightly afraid of her character in the soap.
“But I think my family are impressed… and a little bit scared!”
The on-screen serial killer murdered her old friend Leanna Cavanagh (played by Mimi Slinger), and Paige explained how she got in the right headspace to film the chilling scenes.
Revealing that she was inspired by BBC drama Killing Eve, the actress shared how she modelled herself on Jodie Comer’s Villanelle in preparation for the storyline.
“Jane Hudson [Emmerdale’s executive producer] mentioned that one of the main inspirations was Villanelle from Killing Eve, so I rewatched that,” Paige said.
“And I watched films and documentaries and read books about psychopaths and serial killers, and learnt about the scientifics behind how a psychopath’s brain works.”
She continued: “The general understanding is that the psychopath is born,” Paige told TV Times.
“And an interesting thing is that scientists believe psychopaths have a lower resting heart rate than average, which means they can possibly find normal life quite boring.
“So when they’re doing criminal activity, that’s when they feel really alive.”
As well as discussing how she prepared for the role, the star gave an insight into her on-screen character.
Paige told how she thinks that Meena may have killed before, in addition to murdering Leanna and her friend Nadine.
However, despite exploring her character’s dark side, the star said that she believes Meena to be “incapable of change”.
Last month, Emmerdale fans were waiting for Meena Jutla to get her comeuppance after she pushed Leanna Cavanagh to her death.
The nurse seemingly got away with murder after pushing her friend of a bridge, shocking fans of the popular soap.
Speaking about whether she would get away with her crimes, Paige told The Mirror: “Meena is intelligent. She’s calculating and manipulative.
“I think she knows what she’s doing and if anyone can get away with murder, maybe it’s Meena.”
Emmerdale airs weekdays at 7pm on ITV.
