Golf legend Jon Rahm, 27, has made the decision to pull out of his current championship competition in favour of staying at home. The golfer was, until recently, ranking in third place at the DP World Tour Championship, which began today.

World number one golf champion Jon made headlines after winning his first major, the US Open, earlier this year in June despite twice testing positive for coronavirus.

The sports star is the first Spanish golfer ever to win this competition.

However, despite making waves in the golfing world, the athlete has now made the “difficult” choice to step back, revealing that he needed to spend more time with his family.

This means the golfer will be out of the running to win the Race to Dubai, where he is currently in third place behind Collin Morikawa and Billy Horschel.

“I have come to the difficult decision not to travel to Dubai next week,” he said.

“The demands of a long season with many ups and downs has taken a lot out of me.

“I feel I need to take time to recharge my batteries while spending quality time with my family.

“I would like to take this opportunity to wish DP World and the European Tour all the best for the season-ending event, which is always such a special tournament.”

The sportsman’s family life has become more hectic recently, as earlier this year, Jon’s wife Kelley Cahill gave birth to their first child, a baby boy named Kepa Cahill Rahm.

On April 4, the day after Kepa was born, Jon took to Instagram to share the happy news with his 428,000 followers.

Next to the pictures of their new family of three he wrote in English and Spanish: “Kepa Cahill Rahm, was born 4/3/21 at 12:15am.”

“Momma Kelley is doing great and recovering. Kepa is also in great health.

“He is 7.2 lb and 20.5inch, big boy from the Basque Country.

“Without a doubt the greatest day of my life!” he added.

Jon, Kelley, and their young son Kepa all live in Scottsdale, Arizona.

The couple lived together for two years before they tied the knot in December 2019, at a ceremony in Bilbao, Spain, near Rahm’s hometown of Barrika.

Jon was the number one golfer in the World Amateur Golf Ranking for a record 60 weeks and later became world number one in the Official World Golf Ranking after winning the Memorial Tournament in July 2020.

The sportsman won the Race to Dubai title, which crowns the European Tour’s number one player, in 2019.

When Jon made history with his US Open win, it was just 15 days after being forced out of the Memorial Tournament because of his first positive Covid test.

He was also ruled out of the Tokyo Olympics just a week before he was due to fly to Japan, but he took these set-backs in his stride, going on to win three and a half points from five matches in Europe’s Ryder Cup defeat by the United States.
