Fern Britton, 64, has admitted her daughter called her a “grumpy old g*t” as she expressed feeling “irritated” by a woman she had encountered while out and about. The former This Morning host is mum to four children in total, including her daughters Grace Jones, and Winnie Vickery, 19, who she shares with former husband Phil Vickery.
Fern typed on Twitter: “Yesterday my daughter said I had become a grumpy old git!
“All because I said that woman I’d met for a nanosecond was very irritating. She was!”
In response her followers agreed at times they could be “miserable” too as they reassured Fern she was not alone in her lowered tolerance of small talk.
One said: “Blimey, it’s a good thing I’m not her mum! Oddly, I find everyone irritating at the mo. People standing too close, walking too slow, driving too fast, driving too slow, talking too loud, not minding their own business… it all gets me in a proper tizz. It’ll pass. Soon, I hope!”
A second replied: “Small talk bores me now! Im definitely less tolerant of people but then I haven’t had to see many over the last 18 months!”
While a third replied: “Friends of mine said I was miserable because I happened to mention that I didn’t like the Spice Girls.”
“We just don’t suffer fools gladly as we get older. I’ve been accused of the same thing but rise above it as we’re all grumpy sometimes! Even young people can tut with the best of ‘em,” a fourth added.
The TV presenter is also mum to twins Jack and Harry, 27, and daughter Grace, 24, from her first marriage to Clive Jones.
Grace was just five months old when Fern’s 12-year marriage to TV executive Clive imploded.
Fern spent a year on her own, throwing herself into her TV work, when Phil came into her life as the resident chef on Ready, Steady, Cook and later This Morning.
While there was an instant attraction between Fern and Phil, the mum convinced herself he wouldn’t want to be with a woman who already had three children.
Recalling their early days of romance, Fern told The Telegraph: “The boys were four; Grace hadn’t even started toddling. I remember thinking at the time that nobody was going to take on a 40-something woman with three kids.
“Then, one day at work, someone said, ‘Phil Vickery fancies you.’ And I went ‘Remind me – which one is he?’ Eventually, I kidnapped him, put him and his dirty washing – he was single at the time – in my car and drove him home.
“The next day, he baked me his irresistible gooseberry crumble.”
Fern and Phil were married for nearly two decades before they decided to separate last year.
The couple’s relationship came to an end after they realised they were on different paths.
The star told Woman & Home magazine: “We simply needed to follow our own paths. Over time we realised we weren’t necessarily having the kind of life we once did.
“It seemed right to say ‘thank you’ and move on.
“But we do have a good friendship. Phil and I had the greatest fun together and we have the most beautiful daughter together, Winnie…. as so we will always be connected.”
“Life has changed for me in the last ten years, especially with my career. So it’s lovely to think I can just concentrate on writing, the kids and getting on with life.
She added: “This feels quite comfortable, and Phil and I knew it was the right thing to do.”
