Five of the best moments from Trooping the Colour – including Louis’ cheeky balcony appearance

We might still have a jam-packed schedule of Platinum Jubilee celebrations for the rest of the bank holiday weekend, but there have already been some standout moments.

Trooping the Colour, in particular, was as proud an event as ever and showed the United Kingdom off in all its marching, trooping and parade glory.

The Queen has reportedly met her great granddaughter Lilibet for the first time, and a surprise visit by Prince George and Princess Charlotte in Cardiff made for some lovely family photos.

But let's rewind for the moment and take it back to the start of the festivities with five of the best moments from Trooping the Colour. Yes, including Prince Louis' cheeky balcony appearance.

In fact…

Prince Louis

Prince Louis stole the show, and our hearts, with his reaction to the loud noise of the fighter jet flypast.

The youngest child of Prince William and Kate Middleton was seen covering his ears as fighter jets flew by overhead in the formation of the number 70, to celebrate the historic milestone for the Queen.

In his defence, they are very loud indeed.

With social media on his side, the adorable moment naturally went viral as fans pointed out just how cute the young prince was being.

One user Tweeted: "Oh #Louis !! Bless him, it must have been so loud! I wonder how William and Catherine explain all this pomp and pageantry to their kids!"

A second user wrote: "Prince Louis is stealing the show on the balcony."

Another added: "Love little Louis chatting with his great grandmother and being very animated with the fly past… what a cutie."

Red Arrows

Without fail, the acrobatic skills of the Red Arrows is always a highlight of Jubilee celebrations.

Their painstakingly tight formation and coloured trail display made for a spectacular scene in the blue skies above London, and was met with many a smartphone filming and snapping from the streets below.

Carriage debuts

The youngest members of the immediate royal family made their carriage debuts as they took part in their first carriage procession along The Mall.

Accompanied by mum Kate Middleton and grandmother Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, they waved to the crowd as part of the celebrations marking the Queen’s 70-year reign.

Cheers went up from thousands of spectators as they caught sight of George, Charlotte and Louis, while Prince William was spotted on horseback alongside Prince Charles and Princess Anne for the birthday parade.

Meghan 'shushing'

Meghan Markle was spotted leaning down to chat to the Tindall and Phillips children, jokingly shushing them as the girls giggled together, making faces and beaming at one another.

It was a surprisingly fun display, despite the tensions that had been predicted between Meghan Markle and the royal family following their departure from the UK.

Speaking to The Mirror, body language expert Judi James claims Meghan was "in her element" as she chatted to the Tindall and Phillips children.

She said: "Glimpsed from a window we could see Meghan and Harry looking unexpectedly relaxed and upbeat in a low-key appearance that seemed much more to their tastes than previous awkward, tense appearances with the rest of the Firm."

She added: "Meghan was looking playful and in her element with a group of young royals who also seemed to adore her, shushing them with her eyes wide and rounded but also smiling and she shushed to suggest she wasn’t being totally serious."

Queen's balcony appearance

It was uncertain in the lead-up to Trooping the Colour whether or not the Queen would be making an appearance.

She has stepped back from public appearances, having recently missed the Opening of State Parliament due to mobility problems.

But, in splendid fashion and to the jubilation of the crowd, she walked out onto the balcony with her son Prince Philip and working members of the royal family.

Together, they stood and watched as the Jubilee Flypast travelled overhead in a tremendous display, in which a special team of Typhoon Jets formed a '70' to celebrate her 70 years on the throne.
