From teepees to mini suits – how JLS’ Aston Merrygold made kids central to wedding

A wedding day is all about the bride and groom.

But JLS' Aston Merrygold and Sarah Richards made sure their sons Grayson, four, and Macaulay, two, played a very special role on their beautiful day.

The boys were ring bearers and delivered the rings to the couple’s officiant, Aston’s JLS bandmate JB Gill, before they were placed on each other’s fingers.

The pair chose stunning platinum wedding bands from Keeble London.

Grayson and Macaulay did their job perfectly and looked adorable in their matching tuxedos and black and white Vans trainers. They were also treated to a play area with tepees kitted out with Marvel cushions and popcorn boxes.

Aston and Sarah tied the knot in front of 155 guests at Liverpool’s historic Palm House in Sefton Park.

They were joined by famous faces including JB, his wife Chloe, Rochelle and Marvin Humes, who was a groomsman, Oritsé Williams and his fiancée Kazz Kumar, Alesha Dixon and her partner Azuka Ononye, Kimberly Wyatt and her husband Max Rogers and Louis Smith and his partner Charlie Bruce.

On the morning of the wedding, Grayson and Macaulay were with Aston and getting his sons ready for the big day helped him control his nerves, as he focused on changing nappies and steaming their suits.

“Sometimes kids don’t like getting dressed so we made such a big thing about their suits and made it into a bit of a game,” Aston says.

“They were so wired and excited when we were getting ready, but then Macaulay fell asleep in the car on the way to the venue.”

Macaulay continued to snooze away at the venue in the arms of Aston’s mum Siobhan as the guests waited for Sarah to arrive, with the bride running almost an hour late.

Grayson then took to the stage and announced, “Mummy is 10 minutes away.”

Sarah’s delay was thanks to the traffic from a Premier League match between Everton and West Ham.

“I’m always late,” she told OK! from their mini-moon at Soho Farmhouse two days later. “Rochelle [Humes] said to me the night before, ‘It’s a tradition for the bride to be 20 minutes late,’ so I was like, ‘Brilliant, I’ll take that,’ but then there was so much traffic.

“It was making me so nervous as we didn’t seem to be getting anywhere. I just wanted to be next to Aston and I hated the thought of him standing there waiting.

"My maid of honour had my phone and I was like, ‘You need to text Ast and tell him I’m coming!’”

Thankfully the now-Mrs Merrygold did arrive and the pair were pronounced husband and wife shortly before 3:30pm, with Aston calling the day “the most special” of his life.
