TV and radio star Gemma Atkinson took to social media today to reach out to After Life actor and creator Ricky Gervais. The 36-year-old former soap star urged the TV star not to kill off his character’s beloved dog in the popular Netflix programme following a very upsetting scene from his comedy drama show, Derek.
In an episode from the Channel 4 series, Ricky’s character Derek had to say goodbye to his dog.
Ricky posted a clip from the programme, telling fans that it was the “saddest scene” he’d ever had to film.
The accompanying footage, which he shared with his 14.4 million followers, saw Derek learn that his pet needed to be put down, before he was seen comforting the animal as he died.
“Probably my the saddest scene I’ve ever done,”(sic) he captioned the heartbreaking clip.
Ricky was inundated with messages after sharing the scene online.
Former Emmerdale star Gemma, who has two dogs of her own, urged the star not to “kill off” his After Life character Tony Johnson’s trusty canine companion Brandy, as it would be too upsetting to watch.
“Please don’t kill off Brandy in #AfterLife as well! Can’t cope,” she added followed by a crying emoji.
“He always promised he would never do that,” one fan remarked in the comments section of her post.
“Nothing worse than saying goodbye to your dog, it’s the absolute worst,” another added.
Many others, including a few famous faces, took to the comments section of Ricky’s post to praise the actor for the scene.
“Oh @rickygervais – so sad but very beautiful too. Bravo,” wrote ITV presenter Lorraine Kelly.
“Went through exactly this not too long ago,” added BBC sports pundit Gary Lineker.
“Made me cry again but also brought back so many happy memories. Beautifully done, Ricky,” he continued.
After Life follows the story of journalist Tony following the death of his wife Lisa.
Brandy the dog is his best friend and his reason to keep living.
In an earlier social media update, the 60-year-old actor and comedian told fans that he loved the pooch in real life and shared some behind-the-scenes footage of the pair in action.
“I love this dog,” he captioned the clip which showed the dog, real name Anti, licking his face in between takes.
Mum-of-one Gemma lives with her fiancé Gorka Marquez, their two-year-old daughter Mia, and her two dogs Ollie and Norman.
The former Strictly star regularly delights her followers with pictures and videos of her two spaniels, who have been with her for many years.
Just last month, she praised the pair for their kind nature around her child.
“There was never a doubt in my mind that either of you would change when Mia arrived. And you’ve both proven me right.
“All you do is bring us all utter joy simply by just being there,” she wrote, in view of her 1.7 million followers.
