Gérard Depardieu was reportedly indicted on 16 December in France, on charges of allegedly raping a 22-year-old woman during the summer of 2018. On Tuesday (23 February), Agence France-Presse reported learning of the charges from a source close to the case. They said the charges were confirmed by a judicial source.

Gérard has previously denied the allegations against him during the initial investigation into the case back in 2019.

The case were reopened against the actor last summer with criminal charges filed in December, the source said.

Gerard’s lawyer Herve Temime, told AFP that Gérard “completely rejects the accusations”.

According to a source close to the case, the star is a friend of the actress’s family.

Some reports have suggested he and the actress were rehearsing a scene of a theatre play, but the source said “there was nothing professional about the encounter”.

The victim’s lawyer, Elodie Tuaillon-Hibon, told AFP that she hoped her client’s “private sphere will be respected” as the case unfolds.

In 2013 he was pictured hugging Vladimir Putin after being handed his Russian passport.

He left France to avoid a new 75 per cent tax rate for earnings over £813,000 per year.
