GMB viewers criticise 'montage of misery' on Christmas Day

‘A montage of misery!’: Good Morning Britain viewers hit out at show for ‘depressing everyone’ as it airs on Christmas Day for the first time

  • Fans were left unimpressed since there was little joy in the video ‘montage of misery’ covering the year’s biggest stories
  • It recapped a year of coronavirus, political unrest, the Black Lives Matter movement and Sarah Everard’s murder.
  • Shamima Begum’s plea to return to the UK and Captain Tom Moore’s death also starred, among other notable stories

Good Morning Britain viewers criticised the show for ‘depressing everyone’ on Christmas Day with a video ‘montage of misery’ covering the year’s biggest stories.

The pre-recorded episode saw hosts Kate Garraway, Susanna Reid and Ben Shephard reminisce over 2021, however fans were left unimpressed since there was little joy to be taken away from the recap.

It recapped a year of coronavirus, political unrest, the Black Lives Matter movement, Sarah Everard’s murder, Shamima Begum’s plea to return to the UK and Captain Tom Moore’s death, among other notable stories.

‘A montage of misery!’: Good Morning Britain viewers hit out at the show for ‘depressing everyone’ on Friday as it aired on Christmas Day for the first time

Taking to Twitter, one viewer wrote: ‘That #GMB montage of the year could barely have been more depressing if it tried.’

A second chimed in: ‘Nice montage of misery from #gmb this morning. Very uplifting!’ while a third penned: ‘GMB depressing everyone on Christmas day.’

Good Morning Britain joined Lorraine and This Morning airing on Christmas Day for the first time in the channel’s history.

Announcing the news last month, ITV Daytime said their three big morning show’s will hope to make the day ‘even more special than usual’ following an ‘uncertain’ festive period.

GMB will now not air again until the New Year amid the Covid surge.

The show had been scheduled to run from Wednesday December 29 to Friday December 31, however bosses axed the programme in order to ‘protect’ the TV team.

A show spokesperson said in a statement: ‘Due to the pandemic and to protect our teams, we have decided to give them an extended break.

‘GMB will not broadcast next week, but will be back on air on Tues 4th Jan 2022.’

Depressing! Viewers were left unimpressed with the show’s recap of 2021

Elsewhere in GMB’s Christmas episode, Ben shared his delight at being on air alongside his friends, insisting he had simply done as he was told by television bosses.

He went on to joke that he’d become the ‘filling in a Christmas sandwich’ while appearing alongside Kate and Susanna.

On the show, he quipped: ‘Well hasn’t Santa delivered for me! I have the absolute pleasure of being the filling in this GMB Christmas sandwich…

‘I have been put here, this isn’t my own doing! I’m just doing as I’m told, as I always do.’

Susanna then joked: ‘We were told that you especially asked for us in your Christmas stocking this morning?’

The trio then went on to discuss whether they had been naughty or nice in 2021, with Ben admitting: ‘Probably a mixture of both this year.’

However, Kate added: ‘I sense there’s a lot of naughtiness going around.’

Family friend: Elsewhere in the episode Martin Kemp and his wife Shirlie joined the hosts by video link from their Christmas Grotto home to remember the late George Michael

Meanwhile, Spandau Ballet’S Martin Kemp, 60, and his wife Shirlie, 59, joined the hosts by video link from their Christmas Grotto home to remember the late George Michael and how he made the holiday season special for their family.

The singer, who died at his home in the early hours of Christmas morning in 2016 at the age of 53, would visit his friends Martin and Shirlie every year to bring them and son Roman gifts.

Speaking of her dear friend, Shirlie said: ‘I think of him every day… I thank him really, because he gave me some of the best Christmases I’ve ever had.

‘He just knew how to create magic and always invited us all round to his house. It was always beautiful.’

Good pals: George and Martin were good friends before George died at his home in the early hours of Christmas morning 2016 (pictured 1984)

Martin added: ‘It was all our friends he made Christmas really special for. It’s been long enough now that we can forget the horrible part of him passing. But it’s long enough now to remember the good parts.’

‘I know that he would want us to have a great Christmas,’ continued Shirlie. ‘I always try extra hard not to be sad.’

Martin shared: ‘Every year, whatever present we brought Roman for Christmas, George would come round with a bigger and better one!

‘I remember clearly the day he brought round the first Playstation and one year, he brought round an electric Batmobile!’

Back together: The Wanted also visited the studio for an a cappella performance of their hits after the band reformed earlier this year following Tom Parker’s brain tumour diagnosis

The Wanted were also seen in the studio for an a cappella performance of their hits after the band reformed earlier this year following member Tom Parker’s brain tumour diagnosis.

Tom, 33, said he was delighted to be able to sing with the group, insisting he did not expect to be able to a year after learning of his tumour.

He said: ‘I’m just cracking on to be honest. It’s unusual to get into this position a year down the way, but I’m just happy to be back with the boys and happy to be out of the house and away from the kids to be honest with you! They’re at that age now where they’re hurting Daddy’s ears!’

On getting back together after seven years, Max George, 33, explained: ‘Things clicked into place straight away, I know that. I think we were quite apprehensive, all of us. Then we met up to do a photoshoot and then as soon as we met it was like, ‘Okay, things haven’t changed at all.”

Siva Kaneswaran, 33, agreed: ‘I think 2020 did bring reality to all of us too, how we missed each other and not to sweat the small stuff.’

‘Especially Tom’s situation,’ added Max. ‘We’re a band of brothers, we’ve got to get this thing going again.’

Commenting on the best things about being back together, SIva chimed in: ‘The laughs and seeing each others’ families. It’s been a moment, it’s been a pleasure.’

While Nathan Sykes, 28, concluded: ‘The biggest gift we’ve got this Christmas is being in a band with Tom.’

Grateful: Tom, 33, said he was delighted to be able to sing with the group, insisting he did not expect to be able to a year after learning of his tumour
