Gogglebox stars Mary Killen and her husband Giles Wood are fan favourites on the Channel 4 show for their witty banter, as they tune into the latest British TV highlights. The couple, who have nicknamed each other “nutty”, have become stars since their first appearance on the programme.

However, Mary recently admitted there has been some tension in their home due to the current coronavirus lockdown restrictions.

The television personality divulged that although she recently realised Giles is “busier than he looks,” they haven’t stopped bickering in the past few months.

She divulged: “The arguing has remained steady over all the lockdown, however.

“Giles is not allowed to knock on the kitchen ceiling (the bathroom is above it) to ask what I am doing in there but he still does.

“He is not permitted to shout from whatever room he is in instead of coming to the room we are in to ask for what he wants, eg, ‘Where is the coffee?’, meaning I have to shout back ‘In the place where it’s kept’, but he refuses to comply.

“And the shouting ratchets up the incivility-ometer and makes everyone tetchy.”

Addressing her habits which also tend to irritate Giles, Mary added: “As far as I know, the only thing he finds annoying about me is that I have too many heaters on. He also doesn’t like me chatting on the phone.”

Fortunately for the pair, Gogglebox has become a positive aspect of their lockdown experience.

Mary explained in her latest column for The Telegraph: “During lockdown, Gogglebox filming has been a real highlight. For a start it meant we had a reason to actually sit down together.

“The production team don’t come every week – it’s like the school term with long breaks in the summer and at Christmas.

“But when they do, the most charming people appear.”

Giles and Mary first met over three decades ago at the Wimbledon College of Art where the former was a student.

Mary, who has written two books about the Queen and two more on etiquette, was a “costume model” at the time.

The Gogglebox star was paid £4.50-per-hour to pose.

The couple, who are in their 50s, have two grown-up children.

Elsewhere, Gogglebox creator Tania Alexander explained a friend suggested Giles and Mary could be good additions to the show.

Reflecting on how producers managed to convince Mary and Giles to sign up, Tania recalled to Radio Times: “A friend of a friend recommended [them] and then I think I got [producer] Lucy Whelan to call to see if they were interested.

“Lucy came off the phone and said Giles is quite keen, Mary’s not a pushover.

“We’ve got a bit of a battle on our hands there.”

Mary and Giles were then given the opportunity to take part in a “taster” session before committing to being regulars on Gogglebox.

Gogglebox continues tonight on Channel 4 at 9pm.
