Gogglebox’s Mary says she’s ‘driven mad’ by Giles in marriage insight

Gogglebox: Mary and Giles defend Boris Johnson

Gogglebox star Mary Killen has confessed that husband Giles can drive her mad in a rare insight into their marriage.

Giles and Mary have become one of Gogglebox’s most loved couples since they joined the show in 2015.

Often seen making hilarious digs at one another, the couple has captured the heart of viewers.

Now, they have offered a rare insight into their marriage as they release their latest book, Country Life.

Speaking to PA, Mary admitted that Gogglebox has brought them closer in a way.

She said: “It’s helpful in some ways for me when I’m being driven mad by him, as I was earlier today when I couldn’t get hold of him.”

The couple, who have two daughters, also insisted that they are “technically incompatible” but not “completely”.

By her own admission, Mary is a social butterfly, while Giles prefers to spend time pottering in his garden.

Mary said: “We are not completely incompatible.

“We share a sense of humour and a taste in friends.”

Their sense of humour is what makes them so popular on Gogglebox.

Mary said: “When I go out, I get these beaming people coming up to me saying, ‘Are you Mary from Gogglebox? We love your husband! He makes us laugh’.

“And I think, ‘Oh, good, he’s cheering people up’.”

Giles added: “It’s become more of a duty now to keep the nation amused.

“It’s like a public service broadcast.

“It’s probably the only time we talk to each other, on Gogglebox, isn’t it Mary, apart from making admin arrangements?”

Change may be on the horizon for the couple though, as they both confessed that they are ready to up sticks again.

Their current Wiltshire country cottage has been their home for more than 30 years.

Giles admitted: “I’m getting itchy feet. I’d like to move now.

“I’ve been here 30 years and I don’t like thatched roofs because all the rain comes onto my head.

“I’d like to live in a detached house with gutters.”

While his eyes are set on the wilds of Shropshire, Mary has her sights set on the big city.

She said: “I still think that for a very old person, which I will be soon, it’s better to be in the city because then you can walk to a hospital appointment, to art galleries and be in the swing of things.”

Country Life: A Story Of Peaks And Troughs by Giles Wood and Mary Killen is out now.

Gogglebox airs every Friday at 9pm on Channel 4.
