Golden Globes 2022 winners list: Kate Winslet and Will Smith scoop top awards

Will Smith, Kate Winslet, West Side Story and Succession are among the stars and shows which won big at the Golden Globes 2022.

The Hollywood awards ceremony took place on Sunday evening with no red carpet, televised show or even any celebrities following the criticism over the lack of Black members in the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the body that presents the awards.

However, the show still went ahead behind closed doors with The Fresh Prince of Bel Air actor Smith leading this year’s winners after receiving the best actor in a motion picture drama for his performance in King Richard. The film sees the actor portray the father of tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams, who groomed them to become world champions.

It is Smith’s sixth Globes nod and first win.

Kate Winslet won her fourth Golden Globe after being recognised for her role in Mare Of Easttown in which she plays a small-town detective.

Announcing the Titanic star as the winner, the awards’ official Twitter account wrote: ‘They may be in movies made for the small screen, but these leading ladies are big stars.

‘Congratulations to Kate Winslet for your #GoldenGlobe for Best Actress — Limited Series, Anthology Series or Television Motion Picture.’

Nicole Kidman won best actress in a motion picture drama for her portrayal of TV legend Lucille Ball in Being the Ricardos.

The film, in which Kidman stars alongside Javier Bardem, follows a week of production for the American sitcom I Love Lucy.

This win marks Kidman’s fifth Globe win, having previously won for her roles in Big Little Lies (2018), The Hours (2003), Moulin Rouge! (2002), and To Die For (1996).

She has been nominated for Globes a staggering total of 17 times.

It was a triumphant year for HBO’s hit drama series Succession, which scooped the Golden Globe for best television series drama.

The darkly comic series follows the gritty power struggle within the Roy family, headed by media mogul Logan Roy, who is played by British actor Brian Cox.

The programme’s lead star Jeremy Strong won best actor in a TV drama series for his role as the devious Kendall Roy, while Sarah Snook – who plays Siobhan Roy – won best performance by an actress in a television supporting role.

Steven Spielberg’s 2021 reimagining of the iconic stage musical West Side Story won the Golden Globe for the best musical or comedy film.

The original Broadway musical debuted in 1957 and featured lyrics written by the late Stephen Sondheim, who died in November last year.

‘If laughter is the best medicine @WestSideMovie is the cure for what ails you,’ the Golden Globes said on Twitter.

Jane Campion was honoured with the best director award for The Power of the Dog, the dark western based on Thomas Savage’s novel of the same name, which won a total of three Golden Globes this year.

Michaela Jae Rodriguez made history by becoming the first transgender actress to win a Golden Globe after being recognised for her role in TV series pose.
