Piers Morgan, 57, took to Twitter earlier today to react to news Rishi Sunak had taken office as Britain’s first South Asian Prime Minister and the youngest person to take office in over 200 years. In view of his 7.9 million followers, the broadcaster also took aim at Liz Truss, who resigned as Prime Minister on Thursday, after just six weeks in office.
In a new, gushing tweet sent this morning, Piers heaped praise on the “smart, focused, serious, honest & purposeful” former Chancellor of the Exchequer.
Along with the tweet, Piers shared a picture of Rishi addressing the nation outside Downing Street in his first speech as the new PM.
The TV star penned: “Rishi Sunak’s speech today was smart, focused, serious, honest & purposeful.
“The grown-ups are back in charge.”
But Piers’ remarks caused debate among other social media users, who rushed to reply to his tweet stating their own stances on the latest political development.
AmeliaRocket1 questioned: “Will you still be supporting him when he cuts public spending to pay for his own economic mistakes and mismanagement and when these policies collapse the NHS, the same NHS you spent lockdown harking on about?”
Simbapatel responded: “He didn’t create covid or war in Ukraine to rise energy prices … most of cuts in spending is driven by external factors.
“Money don’t grow on trees you need to balance books but let’s hope most in need gets funding but others will need to suffer it’s facts.” (Sic)
JuliesBarnes enquired: “The only speech that is relevant is due on the 31st.
“The question is: will Sunak make his difficult decisions fall on the shoulders of people who are already financially struggling and oversee more public service cuts?
“Or will he be in charge of a fairer society?”
Markhem76 said: “I beg to differ. The finger pointing & hanging out to dry of Truss was a move he could live to regret.
“Everyone knows the disastrous policies of Truss and co but he used that as a vehicle to sweep his own mistakes under the table & no doubt has made enemies when he needs goodwill.”
LutherBees stated: “I speak for the nation that we believe in Rishi.”
The new Prime Minister entered No10 just 49 days after Tory members rejected his bid to take on the top job.
The party’s grassroots put their faith in Liz Truss’s vision for a low tax economy and many also blamed him for the downfall of Boris Johnson.
He was appointed as Conservative leader yesterday in a fast-tracked process.
The former chancellor was the only candidate to receive enough support from MPs to formally put his name forward for the top job.
Making reference to his previous rejection from Tory members, Rishi said outside No10: “When the opportunity to serve comes along you cannot question the moment, only your willingness.
“I stand here before you ready to lead our country into the future, to put your needs above politics, to reach out and build a government that represents the very best traditions of my party. Together we can achieve incredible things.”
