H.E.R. Drops Stirring Video For Oscar-Nominated ‘Fight For You’

H.E.R. recently released a gripping video for the Oscar-nominated song “Fight for You” on Tuesday, invoking the undying spirit of the Black Panther Party and paying homage to its past and present members.

The visual begins with H.E.R. narrating a shooting incident where a white police officer killed a black man in New York in 1971.

“Last night they killed one of us… again. More fuel to a raging fire you can’t pray away. Not with a gun pointed at your back or the ground at your face,” she says over footage from the Fred Hampton biopic Judas and the Black Messiah. “I think back to what my father says: ‘Strange fruit, it gets too bitter to taste.'”

The visual then jumps to 2021, with H.E.R. assisting her father in delivering pairs of black shoes that have Hampton’s proclamation “I am a revolutionary” stamped on the heel to her friends and family.

“Fight for You” earned nominations for Best Song from a Motion Picture at the 2021 Golden Globes and Best Song at this year’s Critics Choice Awards.

On Monday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced “Fight For You” has also been nominated for the Oscar for Best Original Song
