Prince Harry and Meghan Markle fell out with the original director of their Netflix show – prompting her to leave the project, according to sources in the US.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s forthcoming documentary has been one of the most talked about programmes of the year – with the Royal Family braced for any new bombshell revelations it might bring.
The pair penned a lucrative deal with Netflix in September 2021 – said to be around £88m – that involved the production of documentaries, scripted shows and children’s television.
It is understood their first pick to direct their upcoming docuseries was Garrett Bradley, the filmmaker best known for her work on the critically acclaimed series about Japanese tennis sensation Naomi Osaka.
However, it has been reported that Harry and Meghan fell out with the 37 year old director over her vision of the project so she left and was replaced by Liz Garbus, the prolific documentary film-maker whose work includes films on iconic singer-songwriter Nina Simone.
A source told Page Six: “Garrett wanted Harry and Meghan to film at home and they were not comfortable doing that.
“There were a few sticky moments between them, and Garrett left the project. Harry and Meghan’s own production company captured as much footage as they could before Liz Garbus was hired.”
OK! has contacted Harry and Meghan’s representatives for a comment on the claim.
Meghan, 41, and Harry, 38, were said to have wanted to make changes to their Netflix show after the Queen’s death in September, amid concerns that viewers would take a dim view of any “truth bombs” that could come out while the royal family was in mourning.
The series has been in production for almost a year – with camera crews following the couple as they went about their lives.
It is expected to cover events including their trip to the Netherlands for Harry’s Invictus Games in April and a visit to New York last year.
It has previously been reported that the show was expected to air this year but had been delayed – with Netflix bosses apparently “rattled” over the backlash against season five of The Crown and its lack of historical accuracy.
However, it has recently emerged that insiders close to the project expect it to be aired in the coming weeks as planned.
Netflix has yet to announce an official release date for the documentary
The streaming giant’s royal drama The Crown, released earlier this month, has already faced fierce criticism for its portrayal of the British monarchy in the 1990s.
Stage and screen veteran Dame Judi Dench called for a disclaimer to be added to each episode of the show, saying it has begun to verge on “crude sensationalism”.
Sir John Major, meanwhile, is said to have described scenes that depict King Charles, then the Prince of Wales, plotting to oust the Queen, as “malicious nonsense”.
