Rod Stewart weighed in on the heated discussion in late November, when Manchester United and Chelsea’s football match resulted in a 1:1 draw, as Jamie and Roy argued whether or not Cristiano should have been benched during the game.

The two further shared their difference of opinion on Cristiano being invited back to the team when Roy appeared agitated.

Rod — who is a longtime Celtics supporter — clearly wasn’t happy about the on-air quarrel, revealing that the heated back and forth went too far as Roy became “far too aggressive” while trying to make his point.

During an appearance on talkSPORT, the Maggie May singer explained: “I think Roy can be a bit of a bully sometimes.”

“I admired him as a player but he’s a bit of a bully.

“I think there’s a way of speaking your mind and (then) there’s a way of speaking your mind and he’s far too aggressive,” he continued.

“He was an elite player but do you think he could be a good manager with that approach?”

Roy briefly played for the Celtics between 2005 and 2006 before hanging up his football career for a managerial role, leading Sunderland in the Premier League followed by Ipswich Town in the second tier.

Roy also enjoyed assistant roles at Nottingham Forest, Aston Villa, and Ireland.

Meanwhile, Rod, who released his latest studio album, The Tears of Hercules, last month, has been on a busy promotional campaign to support the project, which debuted at No. 5 on the official UK albums chart.

During a recent chat with Nihal Arthanayake on BBC Sounds’ Headliners, the rock legend revealed how the pandemic had prevented him from seeing his children.

Rod — who spends his time between Los Angeles and London — recalled having arrived in the UK for work when a halt was placed on international flights as the Covid-19 infection rate rapidly grew.

“For a whole year, I couldn’t leave, couldn’t go to America. It was devastating,” he said, further revealing how he also couldn’t see his only grandchild, Delilah del Toro, who stays with her mother Kimberly Stewart in sunny California.

Rod added: “I was lucky, you know. I live in a lovely big house with big grounds. Pity the poor people who live, you know, in apartment buildings with four kids and two rooms.

“My god. It’s going to leave a scar for a long time.”

In the same interview, Rod also touched on what he believed were the most important values he has taught all of his children.

He didn’t even hesitate with his answer, gushing: “Honesty, don’t boast. Be humble”.

“One of my kids is always telling everyone how good he is, and I hate it.

“Manners is very important to me. As I told all my boys, manner will open doors for you.”

Altogether, Rod has eight children; Sarah, 58, Kimberly, 42, Sean, 41, Ruby, 34, Renee, 29, Liam, 27, Alastair, 15, and Aiden, 10.

During his promo tour, one of Rod’s other stops included an appearance on Loose Women, where he was joined by his wife Penny Lancaster.

The pair, who’ve been married since 2007, recalled how they began facing problems when Penny entered menopause and Rod said she “really wasn’t the person I married”.
