Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway has told how her husband Derek Draper is now eligible for “lots more tests”, as his awareness increases following his battle with coronavirus. Appearing on the ITV show today, the newsreader, 54, relayed the good news to her co-stars as she shared that her spouse of 16 years has “increased awareness” amid his year and a half battle with the virus.
He asked absolutely everything they asked of him

Kate said: “His eyes lit up. We are very clear now that he does understand everything really, and understands everything that I tell him about.”
But despite his increased awareness, the ITV star said that her spouse still can’t respond independently.
“He can’t respond still and communicate, and Derek’s been having lots more tests of things,” Kate explained.
Derek was hospitalised in March 2020 and was put into a coma while in intensive care.
The former lobbyist suffered serious complications including brain inflammation and heart damage.
Kate recently told how Derek is sleeping 20 hours a day amid his battle with long Covid.
Speaking about her spouse’s recovery, she said: “We went to hospital a few weeks ago, (which was) the first time he’d seen medics outside of the home.
“(They) asked him to hold his breath and release his breath, he [did] absolutely everything they asked of him.
“Also just reactions to things and reactions to the children, his responses are appropriate,” she added.

“It does really feel that way as if he is reacting!” she gushed.
Addressing her “double life” as a news reporter and wife of a Covid sufferer, Kate went on: “I think it’s reflecting on that double thing of living with it and reporting on it.
“I think coming in here and the support from all of you has been amazing.”
She explained: “I think it’s been very helpful when talking to political (figures) and talking to people who have been affected in all different ways.

“Thank you so much for voting, I wonder if the reason why you did is because our story is your story. I think we’ve all been touched by the pandemic, whether it’s livelihood or mental health.
“I just want to say to all the Darcey’s and Billy’s and Derek’s and Derek’s families, whatever you’re going through, you’re not forgotten. We want the joy back, we want it to be over but the fight goes on.
“But most of all Derek, you should be here and should have had the chance to tell your own story.
“Derek, you’re going to get the chance, believe! The hope is real! Thank you so much,” she ended her speech.
