In view of his 533,700 followers, the nature enthusiast told of his anguish at finding the badger dead in the road.
Chris wrote: “I met this beautiful badger in the lockdown spring.
“I went to see her every night and slowly won her trust,” he added.
The BBC star told how he had even named the badger after becoming fond of her, revealing why he had taken a liking to her specifically out of all the badgers in the sett.
“I called her the ‘Golden Sow’, she appeared haughty, was more standoffish than some of her group and this made her my favourite,” Chris added while sharing a beautiful picture of the creature.
He continued: “Last night I found her…
“She was still warm,” Chris lamented, posting a distressing image of Golden Sow dead.
Chris went on: “It’s a 30mph limit and a straight road.
“I don’t see how anyone could not see her and don’t understand why they just left her in the middle of the road.
“What is wrong with people?” he asked his followers.
The Springwatch star told how he said goodbye to the badger, who he believed to be pregnant.
Chris wrote in a third tweet how he sat with her in his car where he “touched her nose and stroked her head”, before sharing that he thought she was about to give birth.
The BBC presenter went on to reflect on the times he had shared with her, before telling his followers that he broke down following the loss.
Chris penned: “She was made of the place I love, she had teased and taunted me emerging from her sett, she had held my breath as I lay frozen on her ground, she had made my heart skip beats… and now hers was still forever (sic).
“I cried,” he added.
Chris told how he took her home and laid her to rest underneath a tree to let her bask in the sun for a final time.
He wrote: “I couldn’t let her go.
“I took her home and today I lay her in the sun under a tree and just sat there listening to everything she couldn’t hear, smelling what she could no longer smell.
“What a waste of such beauty. Not my best day. Sorry,” he apologised to his followers.
Following his posts, Chris was soon inundated with messages of support from his followers over the loss of Golden Sow.
