‘I grew up on Corrie, but people still recognise me as the 90s Warburtons kid’ says Sam Aston

He's best known as Coronation Street's Chesney Brown, but Sam Aston has revealed that many people still recognise him as the "90s Warburtons kid".

Sam, 29, joined the cast of the hit ITV soap when he was just nine years old, and next year he will celebrate 20 years on the Cobbles.

The actor, who recently welcomed his second child, a daughter named Daisy, with wife Briony, has now exclusively opened up to OK! about his life on screen, including his early acting career and what it was like when he first joined Coronation Street.

Sam sat down with OK! to watch a video of some of his most notable performances on TV, including some of Chesney's biggest storylines on Corrie.

Chatting about a few of his first acting jobs, Sam revealed that the first one he could recall was an advert for George at Asda, saying: "The first one that I can really remember, is I did a George clothing advert. I only had one line that, I just stood behind a wall.

"It was for kids clothing, back to school, and somebody was doing kick ups. Then the audio said 'and the real difference is' and I just pop out and go 'who likes it!', that was my first role."

However, he then explained that his role in a Warburtons bread advert in the 90s is the one that people that still remember over 20 years later.

"My famous line in it was 'don't be stupid, it's pouring down with rain!'" the star laughed.

In 2003, Sam landed the role of Chesney on Coronation Street after just four auditions, and he's remained on the soap ever since.

Giving an insight into his first ever day working on the ITV soap, Sam said: "It was on location. I remember being really excited actually," before watching an early clip of him and on-screen sister Jennie McAlpine working together.

The dad-of-two explained how Jennie, 38, is like "his big sister" in real life too, with the pair having a close relationship on and off screen.

"I didn't really understand the magnitude of the show, I was only nine years old so naturally, I was just doing something I enjoyed – just acting!" Sam added, revealing that during his early years on the show he "didn't really see it as a job or anything like that".

"I was really lucky as a young kid to be part of the Battersby family. We always had great storylines, good fun and obviously, when they introduced Schmeichel it was brilliant.

"I was a young kid getting to work with a dog and I wasn't allowed a dog at home, so this was another little dream for me," the star happily recalled.

Chesney has been involved in numerous dramatic storylines over the years, with Sam noting how his character was "always hard done by" and had a difficult upbringing.

"I'd always get old ladies coming up to me, 'oh look at Chesney' and you know, grabbing my cheeks and stuff. Obviously, Chesney was always hard done by and he didn't have a great mother figure in his life," the soap star said.

Many were also a fan of Chesney's beloved dog Schmeichel too, and Sam told how Corrie fans will still stop him in the street asking about him, saying: "Wherever I go, even now, people are saying to me 'where's your big dog', 'where's Schmeichel'. He was a massive character to be fair, he was a big part."

Sam also opened up about some of Chesney's more recent storylines, including welcoming quadruplets with girlfriend Gemma Winter (Dolly-Rose Campbell).

He said the storyline was "so much fun", before adding: "Chesney and Gemma, they are chalk and cheese aren't they. They couldn't be more opposite!"

"We just have such a laugh and it's always stuff that's bonkers. It's crazy, but it's good fun. I think I'm just really enjoying that right now," Sam added about his character's current storylines with his on-screen family.

Coronation Street continues on weeknights on ITV.
