Tom Fletcher’s McFly bandmate Harry Judd has told how he “stopped the conversation” after being told that the father-of-three was planning to go on Strictly Come Dancing. Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, the drummer, 35, detailed how he made a good argument as to why the star shouldn’t do the popular BBC dance show this year, before eventually throwing his support behind him when he realised that Tom, 36, was in it for the “right reasons”.

I think I made a good reason as for why he probably should not do it

Harry won the coveted Glitterball trophy in 2011 when he appeared on the show with professional dance partner Aliona Vilani.

Speaking about the moment that his bandmate told him he had been asked to do the dance programme, Harry admitted that he thought Tom had a lot on his plate already.

He said: “He rang me and said, ‘Listen, I’ve been asked to do Strictly again, what do you think?’

“And I said, ‘Look, you know, we’ve got a tour coming up, you’re busy with your books and family, do you really want that?

“‘It’s really full on,'” Harry advised his friend.

The avid cricketer explained how he thought that this year was perhaps not the right time for Tom to go on the dance show amid his multiple other projects.

“‘Don’t get me wrong, it’s a lot of fun but maybe this year’s not the right year but things are going well for you,'” he told his friend.

But despite trying to talk his friend out of appearing on the show, Harry told how nothing he said dampened Tom’s enthusiasm for the dance programme.

He went on: “I think I made a good reason as for why he probably should not do it and he was giving me loads of reasons for why he should do it.

“I just stopped the conversation, I was like, ‘Look, do you really want to do it?’

“He said, ‘Yeah I really want to do it, I love the show, my family loves the show, the kids love it, I just want to do it.'”

Eventually convinced that Tom was invested in appearing for the “right reasons”, Harry told how he threw his support behind his friend.

“I said, ‘Well, you should do it then as you’re doing it for the right reasons,'” he explained.

“He wanted to do it because he genuinely loves the show, he loves Strictly, it’s a bit like he’s a competition winner [appearing on the show].”

Last week saw Tom and his dance partner Amy Dowden voted off the show following their performance in Musicals Week.

The duo danced an emotional Couple’s Choice routine to On My Own from Les Misérables.

Tom and Amy appeared in the dance off opposite Rhys Stephenson and Nancy Xu, but the judges ultimately decided to save the children’s TV presenter.

Speaking about leaving the show, Tom said: “Honestly I’ve had the best time, I’ve loved every second of it.

“I know it was a struggle at times.”

He went on to add: “Thank you so much, it’s been the best experience and I don’t regret a single minute of it, so thank you everyone so much. I’m gutted to leave.”

Strictly Come Dancing continues this evening at 6.55pm on BBC One.
