Micheál Richardson, 25, has spoken out in a rare interview on the difficulty he faced losing his late mother Natasha Richardson, 45, when he was a teenager. The Parent Trap actress died suddenly of epidural hematoma, after suffering a head injury while skiing with her family in Montreal, 12 years ago.

I wasn’t traumatised at all

Opening up on the impact her death has had on his life, the actor explained: “It was so sudden. When it’s unexpected and it’s just a complete freak accident, it really sort of messes with your mind, whether you believe in fate or not.

“It can send you for a bit of a head spin, and so you just latch on to the tiny little memories, whether it’s her laugh or her energy in the room or her cooking.

“I do have her films to go back and watch her in, which I’m incredibly grateful for,” he added to The Times.

Natasha sustained a head injury when she fell while taking a beginners skiing lesson at the Mont Tremblant Resort.

At first, she had refused any medical help but complained of a severe headache about two hours after the accident.

She was flown to Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, where she died two days later.

In a statement issued by her family at the time, they said: “Liam Neeson, his sons, and the entire family are shocked and devastated by the tragic death of their beloved Natasha.

“They are profoundly grateful for the support, love, and prayers of everyone, and ask for privacy during this very difficult time.”

Natasha married Taken actor Liam Neeson in 1994, and the pair had two sons Micheál and Daniel.

Micheál is now set to follow in his parents’ showbiz footsteps alongside his famous dad in Made In Italy, a film that explores grief.

Although making the film has meant both Micheál and Liam have had to reflect on the collective grief they shared from losing Natasha.

In a separate interview, Liam admitted he was nervous his son could be traumatised all over again making this film.

However, Micheál insisted he enjoyed the filming process and the energy on set.

He shared: “No, I wasn’t traumatised at all. There was so much love for the script, even among the crew.

“You know, people lose loved ones. That’s a part of life and there were a lot of people involved who had.

“So there was this really kind of warm vulnerable energy on set,” he added.

Taking real-life inspiration from the tragedy in his life meant Micheál was able to give a more authentic performance.

He explained: “At the times when it had to be emotional it made it sort of meaningful, in a way, if that makes sense.”

Since Natasha’s death, Liam has stayed unmarried and continued to focus on his career.

A few years ago Micheál decided to change his last name from Neeson to Richardson in honour of his late mother.
