Matty Lee, 23, has opened up about a difficult time when his diving partner Tom Daley came out as gay. The star is currently appearing as a contestant on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! every evening on ITV.
Speaking earlier this year, the Olympian recalled the experience he had as diving was considered a “feminine sport” where he grew up.
Matty admitted he was mocked for wearing speedos.
And things got worse in 2013 when Tom came out.
He explained in August: “Schools were brutal at that time.
“Horrible words were thrown around. Everyone would call me gay.”
He also shared to The Sunday Telegraph in the unearthed interview how he is heterosexual.
This isn’t the first time Matty has opened up about these experiences.
Speaking in a video posted to Tom’s YouTube channel in November, Matty elaborated on what happened.
Tom read out a fan question which said: “Matty, have you received any hate or teasing because your diving partner is gay?”
Matty replied: “When Tom came out years and years ago – what year was it?
“So when Tom came out I was away from high school at a competition in Canada.
“For some reason everyone just made up that I was away with Tom, being gay.
“But not now. I don’t see it because it’s just childish.”
Matty has been winning lots of fans in the I’m A Celeb camp since the show began.
Ahead of going in, he admitted one of the reasons he signed up was because he wanted people to know who he was.
The diver shared how he feels he’s not as well known as his diving partner Tom.
He said: “Everyone knows who Tom Daley is but people don’t necessarily know who I am.
“But without each other, we would never have achieved what we have achieved.
“He always gives me credit where it is due and I also do too.
“He is really happy for me to grow as an individual and I think it is a chance for people to get to know me better.”
Matty also admitted how much he values Tom’s advice as well.
I’m Celebrity continues tonight at 9pm on ITV.
