Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith connected after his first marriage
Pinkett Smith and Smith got their start on television in the 1990s. After receiving fame as a rapper, the Gemini Man star got an offer from NBC to star in his show. On Sept. 10, 1990, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air premiered on the network. Soon, the show amplified Smith’s career and landed him his first movie role in Six Degrees of Separation in 1993.
While Smith achieved success in music and TV, Pinkett Smith had recently moved to Los Angeles to pursue her career as an actor. Following a few guest appearances on True Colors and 21 Jump Street, she landed a recurring role as Lena James on A Different World. When Smith saw his future wife on The Cosby Show spinoff, he knew they had to connect in person. However, when he went to a taping of Pinkett Smith’s show, he met his first wife, Sheree Zampino. Years later, the actors connected again, which left Smith torn between two women.
“I knew that was the woman I was supposed to be with, but I was never getting divorced,” he said on Red Table Talk.
Eventually, Zampino filed for divorce from Smith. Once their divorce was finalized, Smith and Pinkett Smith started dating.
‘The Matrix’ star didn’t know how to be monogamous before Smith
Pinkett Smith and Smith dated for two years before becoming pregnant with their first child, Jaden Smith. While the Woo star was three months pregnant, the actors decided to get married on Dec. 31, 1997. Three years later, they welcomed Willow Smith on Halloween 2000.
Shortly after Willow’s birth, Pinkett Smith shared how becoming a wife and mother changed her. She shared with Vibe Magazine that Smith is her only “monogamous” relationship. The Inkwell star also said her household didn’t discuss committed partnerships.
“Most of us come from very dysfunctional places. Will is the first monogamous relationship I’ve had,” Pinkett Smith said. “I never knew what it took to have a healthy relationship or what commitment was all about.”
Jada reportedly had an ‘entanglement’ during her marriage to Will
Despite being married for more than 20 years, Pinkett Smith and Will Smith faced multiple challenges in 2020. At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Girls Trip star shared on Red Table Talk that they were using their time in quarantine to get to know each other again. Additionally, singer August Alsina said in July 2020 that he and Pinkett Smith were in a relationship during her marriage. According to his interview with Angela Yee, the Bad Boys actor permitted them to be together.
Several weeks after Alsina’s interview Pinkett Smith and Smith, who have a reported combined net worth of $400 million, publicly addressed her alleged affair. During an episode of Red Table Talk, she confirmed that she and Alsina were in an “entanglement” at a rocky point in the Smiths’ marriage. However, when they decided to work on their relationship, Pinkett Smith said she and Alsina stopped talking.
“Through that particular journey, I’ve learned so much about myself and was able to really confront a lot of emotional immaturity, emotional insecurity, and I was really able to do some really deep healing,” she said of the “No Love” singer.
