Shameless star James McAvoy met Lisa on the set of Split while he was in the midst of his divorce from former Shameless colleague Anne-Marie Duff – and the rest is history.

It had been rumoured that the Atonement actor had married the personal assistant back in 2019, but nothing had ever been confirmed – until now.

Divorce is a profound, difficult experience… you wake up holding hands in a hurricane. And nobody gave you any storm warnings

It has been reported that the loved-up pair began dating two years after first meeting – and the 42-year-old Scottish actor has now made his commitment official.

When asked by the Guardian newspaper whether he now saw himself as a honorary Philadelphian, he immediately agreed: “Yeah – it’s like a second home for me.”

The first clues to his new romance came shortly after his divorce was finalised with Anne-Marie.

He appeared to celebrate moving on with his life by going Instagram official with Lisa for the first time, both donning Halloween night costume wigs – his dark purple and Lisa’s a peachy red.

James met his previous wife almost two decades ago in 2003, when the pair were due to appear together in Shameless.

Ironically, Anne-Marie wasn’t keen on auditioning for the TV show at all in the beginning, but when her mother saw the script, she vociferously encouraged her.

Her fateful decision to take on the role of Fiona led to her meeting James, who played her love interest, Steve.

Then, fiction became reality as the chemistry between the pair also buzzed off-set.

Three years after their first meeting, they married, and by 2010, had welcomed a son, Brendan.

They pledged not to talk about their relationship publicly, whether at red carpet events or in interviews, seemingly hoping to keep their union sacred and safe from prying eyes.

It seemed to be a winning formula for over a decade, until they finally announced their divorce in 2016.

The joint statement released by the former couple read: “It is with tremendous sadness that we have come to the decision to divorce.

“We enter this next phase with continued friendship, love and respect for one another and the shared focus of caring for our son.”

James remained tight-lipped following the split, only veering off-course to insist that he and Anne-Marie have remained amicable with each other and were committed to co-parenting their son.

However, in 2018, Anne-Marie opened up further on the feelings lurking beneath the split, musing: “Divorce is a profound, difficult experience. It just is.

“It’s a bit like you go to bed and you wake up holding hands in a hurricane. And nobody gave you any storm warnings.

“And if you are recognisable, you can’t leave the hurricane at home, because you walk down the street and everyone knows you are holding hands with the hurricane.

“They mean well and they are well-wishers, but they are strangers so you have to deal with that for a while and be as big a version of yourself as you can be.”

However, Anne-Marie and James will now follow that goal separately.

James is looking forward to beginning a new chapter alongside Lisa, but the proud Scot may have a couple of other identities to compete with “honorary Philadelphian” while he shows solidarity towards his American beau, as he previously confirmed he sees himself as “a Glaswegian Londoner”.
